This fresh option can be explored in the latest Steam Client Beta, as outlined in a recent Steam News post – a move aimed at finding a balance between ensuring quick access to recently played games and efficiently utilizing bandwidth for those with internet data limits.
This feature enables users to choose the timing for game update installations, introducing a Default setting that allows customization based on specific games. For instance, games often played will be updated promptly upon release. This is crucial for extensive updates and games not played in a while, as users can adjust settings to either group multiple updates together before installation or schedule them when the users are asleep.
The latest Game Update can be accessed through the “Downloads” section in the drop-down menu of the beta Steam Client Settings. Here, you’ll find an option titled “‘Let Steam decide when to update the game’“. This option allows users to set it default, giving Steam control over when the game is updated. It considers factors such as when the game was last played, whether the game has been launched, bandwidth availability, and other conditions.
Users have the ability to customize these settings for individual games in their Library, thereby overriding general settings set through the main Settings menu. This allows for more precise tweaking based on specific game requirements. To do this, they should select a game, click on the Gear icon, then Properties, followed by the Updates tab. Here, update options can be tailored which can further be managed under the “Downloads” section within the beta Steam Client Settings.
Remember that there are other settings available that users can explore from the Settings menu, including controlling download speeds and limiting downloads while playing or streaming games. The timeline on when this setting will be available globally, but for now, those with access to the beta Steam Client can try them out immediately.
