As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of both anticipation and frustration regarding the release of State of Decay 3. Having spent countless hours in the post-apocalyptic world of Undead Labs’ previous titles, I eagerly awaited the announcement of the sequel back in 2018. Four years have passed since then, and while we’ve seen glimpses of progress through trailers and updates, the lack of a concrete release date has left many of us in limbo.
The latest rumor, put forth by Jez Corden of Windows Central, suggests that State of Decay 3 might not hit shelves until 2026. While I’m certainly no insider, my own experience tells me that delays are a common occurrence in the gaming industry – especially when it comes to ambitious open-world titles like State of Decay 3.
It’s interesting to note that Microsoft, the publisher of this highly anticipated title, has quite the lineup planned for 2025. With games like Avowed, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Fable, South of Midnight, The Outer Worlds 2, and a new Call of Duty on their schedule, it seems that 2026 might be the year to look forward to for State of Decay fans.
In the meantime, I find myself revisiting State of Decay 2, which received its last update in October. While it’s still a fantastic game, I can’t help but long for the new features and mechanics that State of Decay 3 promises to bring.
With all that said, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see – maybe the zombie apocalypse will happen in real life before State of Decay 3 is released!
As a dedicated zombie game enthusiast with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the anticipation for State of Decay 3 has been building like a crescendo in my heart since its announcement four years ago. With no solid release date yet, many of us have been left to speculate and dream about what the future holds. Some believe it’s coming as soon as 2025, but I’ve heard whispers that we might have to wait a bit longer. However, after the incredible journey Undead Labs took us on with the first two games, I’m willing to endure the wait if it means another masterpiece in the making. Bring on State of Decay 3!
Jez Corden, a journalist known for his work at Windows Central and co-host of the Xbox Two podcast, suggested in the latest episode that State of Decay 3, originally planned for release in 2025, might be moved to 2026. However, it’s important to note that this is just speculation, as the information hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
Back in June this year, during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, we were treated to a fresh trailer for State of Decay 3. This trailer showcased scenes crafted within the game’s engine, but it was lacking actual gameplay footage, indicating that the game might require more time to be fully completed.

It’s important to mention that the developer behind State of Decay 3, Microsoft, has a packed lineup for 2025, including games like Avowed, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Fable, South of Midnight, The Outer Worlds 2, and the latest installment of Call of Duty. In other words, their schedule for next year seems quite full.
Instead of opting for a newer version in the series, if you’re inclined towards revisiting State of Decay 2, just be aware that it received its final update in late October, marking the end of its development by the creators. While you can still access the game on all platforms, keep in mind that there won’t be any fresh content added to it.
State of Decay 3” is set to debut on both PC and Xbox Series X/S platforms. On its release date, the game will be accessible through the Game Pass subscription service.
