A new Stargate show is in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.
I first got into Stargate with the original 1994 movie – Roland Emmerich really delivered with Kurt Russell and James Spader in the leads! But that film was just the beginning. It kicked off this huge franchise, and I ended up watching all three of the live-action TV series – SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe – plus a bunch of the direct-to-DVD movies and even some of the animated stuff. It’s a really expansive universe!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon is creating a new Stargate series for Prime Video, also called Stargate. You can watch an announcement video about the show below.
What do we know about Amazon’s new Stargate show?
The new Stargate series is being created and led by Martin Gero, who also wrote and produced previous Stargate shows.
Gero began their television career twenty years ago as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis, and spent five years working on all three Stargate series. They credit the franchise with teaching them everything they know about making TV, calling it a foundational experience. Gero is excited that Amazon MGM Studios has asked them to lead the franchise into the future, and dedicates the continuation to longtime fans while also welcoming new viewers, promising an amazing experience for everyone.
Details about the show’s storyline are currently being kept secret. In addition to Emmerich, Gero is also an executive producer, along with Dead Devlin, Joby Harold, and Tory Tunnell. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, both known for their work on previous Stargate series, will be offering their expertise as consulting producers.
Nick Pepper from Amazon MGM Studios described Stargate as a long-lasting and well-known series that has fascinated viewers for many years with its imaginative take on humanity’s role in the universe. He stated that, working with Martin, Tory, and Joby, they are excited to launch a new installment of the franchise on Prime Video, respecting its history while also moving it forward in a compelling and heartfelt way.
