Stargate Is Heading To Tubi In November

It’s a hugely popular science fiction series, and the very first movie, released 31 years ago, will soon be available to watch for free online.

Starting November 1st, you can watch the 1994 film Stargate on Tubi. The movie centers around the discovery of the Stargate, an ancient device that’s a gateway to other planets. The U.S. Air Force enlists the help of Egyptologist Daniel Jackson to translate the symbols on the Stargate, allowing them to travel to the planet Abydos. There, they team up with the local inhabitants to free them from the control of an alien being named Ra.

Directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written with Dean Devlin, the movie features Kurt Russell as Colonel Jack O’Neil, a somewhat cynical Air Force officer, and James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson, a brilliant but unconventional linguist and archaeologist. Dr. Jackson’s unique ideas about the pyramids ultimately lead to the discovery of the Stargate – an ancient, ring-shaped device that opens a pathway, or wormhole, to other planets.

I was so excited to see familiar faces like Jaye Davidson, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, and Viveca Lindfors pop up in supporting roles! When Stargate came out, everyone was surprised by how well it did – it made over $196 million worldwide, even though it only cost $55 million to make. It definitely sparked some debate, though. Critics seemed pretty split on the story and the special effects, and honestly, it still has a somewhat low 53% rating from critics these days.

I was thrilled to see just how much everyone loved Stargate – the box office proved it, and it actually has a really solid 73% audience score after over 100,000 reviews! I recently read on Slash Film that Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin originally envisioned the film as the start of a trilogy. They had this amazing idea to go way beyond Ancient Egypt and delve into the roots of all mythologies, suggesting they’re all connected. It’s a shame that didn’t happen, but what a concept!

The actors were keen to return for any future films, and had reportedly said they were interested in continuing their roles. Although there were initial conversations with MGM, including more talks at Comic-Con in 2006, those movies never happened. Instead, the story of Stargate continued as a television series.

More Stargate Projects Could Be on The Way

MGM gave the project to Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, the creators of Stargate SG-1. This series first aired on Showtime in 1997 and continued for ten seasons, greatly expanding the world of Stargate and leading to several spin-offs. These included Stargate Atlantis (2004–2009), Stargate Universe (2009–2011), and the animated series Stargate Infinity.

The television series updated the story and its origins, but it kept the same feeling that made the original movie so popular. Fans enjoyed both versions, and in 2023, MGM hinted at a continuation of the story for both the movie and TV show, though no official plans have been announced yet.

Stargate will available to stream on Tubi from Nov. 1.
