The mastermind behind Stardew Valley has admitted that there’s a possibility the game might continue to evolve indefinitely, with potential updates even half a century down the line.
Eric Barone, the developer behind Stardew Valley, finds it hard to let go of his successful creation. Despite being nearly nine years old now (with a development period of twelve years), Stardew Valley remains one of the most frequently played games on Steam. What’s more, sales for this game have surpassed an astounding 41 million copies.
Half a century of Stardew Valley
Indeed, Barone understands that he can’t keep expanding Stardew Valley without bounds – or rather, excessively. He highlighted in an interview with NPR that a video game can contain too much content, which is why he will carry on refining Stardew Valley until, in his view, the content becomes so abundant that any further development might become “detrimental to the enjoyable experience” of the game.
Despite the recent game update being somewhat larger than anticipated, it’s not looking probable at the moment that Barone will immediately return to Stardew Valley. However, he has hinted that he may eventually go back to add a few new features. In his own words: “Perhaps even 50 years from now, I might make some additions [to Stardew Valley].
Retirement not for Eric Barone
Though I’ve temporarily escaped Barone’s latest hit, it’s far from a moment of leisure. In the chill of December, the game developer shared that he’s dived back into Haunted Chocolatier development – work that was initially put on hold to tackle Stardew Valley version 1.6, minor yet crucial updates, and adapting this update for console and mobile gaming platforms.
Despite the occasional exhaustion from his heavy workload and personal deadlines, Barone remains deeply connected to video game development. In a humorous thought experiment, he muses about the amusing prospect of launching another update when he turns 90 years old.
I enjoy crafting items and have no plans to stop working in the foreseeable future. It might amuse me to introduce a new version of my work when I’m around 90 years old, if I make it that far. Here’s hoping for good health and longevity!
