Shawn Levy reveals who will compose music for Star Wars: Starfighter
Shawn Levy announced that Thomas Newman will be composing the music for the new movie, Star Wars: Starfighter.
In an interview with Kevin McCarthy, composer Howard Levy revealed that Tom Newman is among his favorite film scorers, appearing on his list of top ten. He specifically praised Newman’s work on films like The Shawshank Redemption, Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, and American Beauty, calling him a master. Levy also explained that while his upcoming score would be inspired by classical music, he wouldn’t be directly reusing themes from John Williams’ compositions.
Levy shared that the film’s music would include original themes, similar to the iconic scores John Williams created for previous Star Wars movies. He mentioned the new score would be inspired by Williams’ work, but emphasized he wanted a composer who wasn’t afraid to create memorable, emotionally resonant themes.
John Williams believes a film can benefit from having several musical themes. He doesn’t avoid using a variety of musical ideas to enhance the story, working alongside the dialogue and visuals.
Levy contacted Thomas Newman directly with the idea of having him score the film. Newman asked to see the script and learn about Levy’s vision for key scenes and musical themes. After considering everything, Newman signed on to compose the music.
The upcoming Star Wars film, Starfighter, introduces a fresh storyline and original characters developed by Shawn Levy and Jonathan Tropper. Levy shared in an interview that Lucasfilm gave them significant creative control, simply asking them to create something innovative and different from previous installments.
The film is currently in production and scheduled for theatrical release on May 28, 2027.
