Star Wars Just Introduced Its Own Gotham City

The 2026 sequel to Clone Wars established a dark and dangerous location in the Star Wars universe, similar to Gotham City. Maul: Shadow Lord tells the story of Maul (played by Sam Witwer) as he attempts to rebuild his criminal organization on Janix, a remote planet largely ignored by the Galactic Empire. Janix’s isolation provides Maul with a secure hideout and base of operations. However, his relentless quest for revenge against Emperor Palpatine could ultimately lead to his destruction, as his actions might attract the Imperial forces he’s trying to avoid—potentially even Darth Vader.

According to Matt Michnovetz, the head writer of Maul: Shadow Lord, the planet Janix is designed to feel like a dark and complex city, drawing inspiration from places like Metropolis, Gotham, and classic film noir. He envisions it as a grimy, neon-lit version of Gotham City, but set in the Star Wars galaxy.

In the same interview, Michnovetz also mentioned a “strange, underlying danger on the outskirts” of the planet, suggesting that hidden threats could interfere with Maul’s activities in Janix.

The crater raises a lot of questions: What lies beneath it? What’s at its rim? And what exists beyond it? While the city feels like a blend of classic detective stories and gritty urban landscapes, there’s also a sense of something unknown and potentially dangerous lurking just beyond its limits – a feeling of being on the edge of unexplored territory.

The initial episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord establish Janix as a dark and dangerous city, teetering on the edge of total chaos. The planet strongly resembles Gotham City, sharing its problems with powerful criminals and a police force struggling to maintain control.

The comic Maul: Shadow Lord has already established a character similar to Commissioner Gordon – Captain Brander Lawson, a dedicated police detective trying to keep the peace. However, Maul’s appearance throws the city into further chaos, making Lawson’s job even harder.

Darth Maul isn’t a hero like Batman, but he’s a major troublemaker on the planet Janix. His cruel plans destroy the planet’s peace, turning what was a quiet hideout for criminals into a war zone between his expanding criminal organization and the forces of Palpatine’s Empire.

New episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord are released on Disney+ every Monday at midnight Pacific Time/3 a.m. Eastern Time, culminating in a two-part finale on May 4th, also known as Star Wars Day. You can find more information about why the release of Maul: Shadow Lord on Disney+ is significant here.

Why Creating Maul: Shadow Lord’s Janix Into Star Wars’ Gotham Is Brilliant

Okay, so after watching the first couple episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord, it’s become pretty clear to me that Janix is basically a dream come true for a guy like Maul. It’s the ideal place for him to operate, and honestly, it feels like it’s setting the stage for his big comeback after everything went down in the Clone Wars. It’s a perfect base of operations for him to rebuild.

Janix is depicted as a vulnerable criminal world, ready for someone to take control, and Maul is the ideal villain to do it, eager to establish a new criminal empire there. The location also offers him a level of freedom he hasn’t had before.

With a dark and stylish look reminiscent of classic noir films, Maul: Shadow Lord vividly portrays the world of Janix at night, similar to the famously gritty nighttime atmosphere of Gotham City. This urban, shadowy setting provides an ideal stage for exciting lightsaber battles, increasingly serious stakes, and the intimidating arrival of the Empire.

Overall, the planned 2026 sequel to Clone Wars presents a Janix that’s designed with the dark, realistic feel of Gotham City, which is exciting because it opens up great new story options for the show’s interesting characters.
