Galactic Battlegrounds,” launched in 2001, was a real-time strategy (RTS) game that blended the core features of “Age of Empires II” with the Star Wars universe. Despite not being a blockbuster success, it did manage to build a loyal fanbase. Around ten years ago, some of these dedicated fans took it upon themselves to further develop the game independently. The fruit of their labor is now known as the Expanding Fronts mod, which has recently received its first significant update in close to a year.

To clarify what the Expanding Fronts mod does, let’s break it down: This project enhances the game significantly, enabling high-resolution gameplay at a smooth 60 frames per second (FPS). It virtually eliminates most of the bugs initially left by the original developers and offers an alternate multiplayer structure for online play (as official servers have been shut down for some time).

The campaign puts strong emphasis on RPG elements and tells the story of a thief and adventurer trying to survive in the early days of the Galactic Empire. Compared to the original version, the remaster introduces, among other things, voice acting and new upgrades for the hero, as well as extensive improvements to many aspects of gameplay.
  2. New optional AI modules focused on peaceful play have also been added. As a result, players can now compete against the AI in Monument Race mode, where economic development is the main objective. It’s also now possible to sign limited-time peace treaties with the AI.
