Star Wars Finally Admits to the Biggest Blunder from Its Sequel Trilogy

Star Wars has acknowledged a major mistake from the sequel trilogy. Although Lucasfilm’s Episode VII-IX had some good parts, most Star Wars fans generally found the entire sequel era to be controversial. While there were excellent moments, such as introducing Daisy Ridley as Rey, there were also significant shortcomings, like how they dealt with Andy Serkis’ villain, Snoke.

Initially presented as the major villain for all three films in The Force Awakens, the character was surprisingly sidelined in The Last Jedi. He reappeared in The Rise of Skywalker, though it was revealed he was an unsuccessful clone of Emperor Palpatine – a development that didn’t improve things. Snoke’s storyline sparked significant debate within the Star Wars fan base, with many seeing it as representative of the disappointing Sequel Trilogy experience.

For a long time, Lucasfilm and the creators of Star Wars haven’t said much about how they handled the story of Snoke. But with the new LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past series, it looks like the franchise is finally willing to joke about the problems with that Sith storyline.

In the third episode of the new animated series, there’s a discussion between Jedi Bob, voiced by Bobby Moynihan, and the new character Pirate Padmé Amidala. This conversation appears to be making fun of the main villain from the Sequel trilogy.

Parodying the Sarlacc Pit scene from Return of the Jedi, Jedi Bob protests his impending doom as he and other heroes are thrown into the sand by his captors – Amidala’s pirate crew.

But when Bob mentions the Sarlacc, his adventurous jailer objects. Amidala’s assistant droid, Pirate C-3PO, responds, “A Sarlacc? Oh dear, no. You’ll be thrown into something much worse – the Snoke pit.”

Just then, dozens of Snoke clones come crawling out of the bit in the sand below. 

The series really takes off when Yesi, a fellow dimension-hopper and Bob’s companion, asks “What are those things?” – things quickly become very exciting.

Amidala responds, “We discovered a lot of clones that were thrown away – copies of this Snoke character. We weren’t sure what to do with them, so we just tossed them into this hole.”

After being questioned more about Snoke by a casually dressed, shirtless surfer dude resembling Luke Skywalker, Amidala dismisses the topic, concluding with, “It doesn’t even really matter:”

Yesi: “What are those things?”

So, I was talking with Amidala, and she told me this wild story. Apparently, they discovered a whole group of clones – rejects, basically – of Supreme Leader Snoke. They were totally unsure what to *do* with them, so they ended up just tossing them into this giant pit. Can you believe it? It’s a bit of a dark turn, but it explains a lot about the backstory. She said it was a tough decision, but they felt it was the only way to handle the situation. It’s a shocking reveal, honestly.

Luke Skywalker: “But who’s Snoke?”

Amidala: “It doesn’t even really matter:”

This marks the first time Lucasfilm or Star Wars has officially spoken about the issues surrounding the Snoke character. It appears the studio now recognizes that they didn’t handle the character’s development in the Sequel Trilogy very well. It seems they acknowledge a mistake was made. This is a significant admission.

Over the two seasons of Rebuild the Galaxy, this LEGO-based series playfully referenced many aspects of the Star Wars world, including popular internet jokes like Darth Jar-Jar and the habit of Jedi Cal Kestis to do extra backflips in video games.

However, this storyline with Snoke seems like a particularly direct acknowledgment that the character wasn’t handled well – almost like admitting it was a mistake.

Throughout much of the Sequel Trilogy, it often seemed like there wasn’t a clear, overarching plan. The introduction and quick removal of Snoke is a prime example of what frustrated many fans with the new Star Wars stories.

This isn’t about Kathleen Kennedy publicly admitting the Snoke storyline was a mistake at Star Wars Celebration or another Lucasfilm event. However, it does demonstrate that the famous sci-fi franchise recognizes its flaws and is willing to poke fun at itself when the situation calls for it. It shows a degree of self-awareness.

As a huge LEGO Star Wars fan, I was really excited to dive into LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past. The show presents a fun, non-traditional take on the Star Wars universe – it’s totally outside of established canon! Basically, it’s all thanks to these two young, somewhat clumsy characters, Sig and Dev Greebling, who accidentally took the galaxy apart and put it back together in season one. Now, in this new set of episodes, they’re facing off against a fresh villain: Darth Solitus. He’s a powerful Sith Breaker, and his goal is pretty simple – total galactic domination. It’s a wild ride, and I’m loving how they’re shaking things up!

Pieces of the Past boasts a fantastic cast, with performances by Gaten Matarazzo, Tony Revolori, Bobby Moynihan, and Ahmed Best. You can now watch all four episodes of this new animated series on Disney+.

Will Star Wars Ever Come Back to Snoke?

Just because shows like LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy playfully poke fun at the Snoke storyline from the Sequel Trilogy doesn’t mean Star Wars won’t explore the character again. They might try to give Snoke a better story or explain him more fully in a future project.

This is a common practice for the franchise. Shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels have often taken less popular parts of the story and added details to them later on, essentially expanding the existing lore.

Given that Snoke is widely considered a disappointing character in Episodes VII-IX of the Skywalker Saga, it’s likely he’ll continue to be viewed negatively in the future.

During the three seasons of The Mandalorian, there was a hint that Grogu (also known as Baby Yoda) might be connected to Palpatine’s scheme to create clones, possibly even leading to the creation of Snoke.

Considering how the series has developed since then, and with its expansion to film with the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, it seems that might not happen anymore, though it’s not certain.

It’s possible the MandoVerse stories could reveal important information about Snoke, particularly because Clone Wars and Rebels creator Dave Filoni is leading the creative direction.
