The new Star Wars game, Fate of the Old Republic, has been announced, and it’s designed to capture the magic of a classic, highly-regarded role-playing game.
The Game Awards 2025 celebrated Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 winning Game of the Year, but that wasn’t all! The show also featured exciting announcements, including a new game from the creators of Divinity: Original Sin 2 (Larian Studios) and a sequel to the popular game Control. Attendees and viewers got a detailed preview of the games coming in the next few years.
The biggest surprise for many was the first look at Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Here’s a rundown of everything revealed about the game so far.

Is there a Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic release date?
Currently, there’s no confirmed release date, or even an estimated timeframe, for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. The developers recently shared on the official Star Wars website that the game is still early in development – which is expected, considering the studio was founded just last year in July 2025.
Developer
Arcanut Studios is creating FOTOR, and Casey Hudson is leading the project as Game Director. Hudson is known for his previous work at BioWare, where he directed the original Mass Effect games and the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Platforms
The game is planned for release on computers and consoles, but the developers haven’t announced which specific consoles yet. Considering the game is still several years from launch, it’s probable it will actually come out on the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox consoles instead.
Gameplay & story

Similar to the first game, Fate of the Old Republic is a role-playing game where your choices matter. You’ll play as a character sensitive to the Force, and every decision you make will shape their path towards the light side or the dark side. While the exact time period within the Old Republic era hasn’t been revealed, the game will be set thousands of years before the events of A New Hope.
The game’s creators have said it’s inspired by KOTOR, but it won’t continue the original story. It features new characters and a completely fresh storyline.
You don’t need to have played the previous games to enjoy FOTOR. But if you’re interested in the backstory, the remake of Knights of the Old Republic by Saber Interactive is still being worked on, though it’s had a difficult development.
