Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic Is Probably Many Years Away From Release

Don’t expect to play the new Star Wars RPG, Fate of the Old Republic, anytime soon. Although the announcement trailer at The Game Awards 2025 got fans of Knights of the Old Republic excited, the game is still in the very beginning stages of development, even with KOTOR and Mass Effect veteran Casey Hudson leading the project.

According to StarWars.com, Hudson’s new game studio, Arcanaut Studios, launched this year after his previous studio shut down in November 2024. They’re currently hiring for several leadership roles, and the announcement trailer serves as a way to attract potential employees – a common practice in the game development industry.

Because big games take so long to develop, it will likely be years before we see anything solid about Fate of the Old Republic, and even longer before it actually comes out. It’s understandable why many people doubt it will be released this decade.

Hudson shared with StarWars.com that the project is still in its early stages and faces numerous hurdles. He expressed his gratitude for the long-standing support from the KOTORfans community and is excited to collaborate with them, promising to share updates as they become available.

After working on the first Knights of the Old Republic, Hudson kept in touch with Lucasfilm. Following the creation of Arcanaut, a chance to develop another Star Wars game presented itself.

Not much is known about the story yet. While it’s not a continuation of the Knights of the Old Republic game, the developers say it will feature new characters and a completely original story. They aim to capture the same sense of player choice and deep involvement in the Star Wars universe that made the original KOTOR so popular.

Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about The Old Republic. Reports suggest that a remake of Knights of the Old Republic 2 was started but later paused. Plus, at The Game Awards 2025, a new Star Wars game called Star Wars: Galactic Racer was announced.
