A famous item from the movie Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back recently sold for much more than expected at auction. It was the most expensive item sold at the event, even beating out collectibles from other popular franchises. Star Wars memorabilia is known for being highly valuable, with items like Darth Vader’s lightsaber reportedly selling for $3.654 million and an X-wing starfighter going for $3.135 million in the past.
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back C-3P0’s head earns $1 million at auction
A glowing C-3PO head from the movie Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back recently sold for $1,058,400 at a Propstore auction. This price is higher than what items from popular films like Jaws, The Lord of the Rings, Top Gun, and Batman Begins have sold for. Experts had predicted it would sell for between $350,000 and $700,000.
As a movie memorabilia enthusiast, I was floored by this find. Apparently, this Boba Fett helmet isn’t just a helmet, it’s claimed to be the only original from “The Empire Strikes Back” ever offered for sale to collectors. An auction house expert shared in a video that it came directly from the family of someone who actually worked on the film’s crew – that kind of provenance is huge, and really adds to its potential value and authenticity.
The head measures 25cm high, 20cm wide, and 32cm deep. It’s built from three main parts: a backplate, a faceplate with eyes already attached, and a neck ring. These pieces are securely connected using two bolts at the neck and an antenna on the forehead. The entire head is constructed from lightweight fiberglass, which allows for a snug fit. The individual components were actually molded directly into the fiberglass during manufacturing.
When creating C-3PO’s glowing eyes, designers were careful to ensure actor Anthony Daniels wouldn’t be blinded. They placed black material behind the lights to shield his vision, leaving small openings for him to see out of.
The right eye still has its original connections. The left eye, however, has been rewired and is now powered by a new battery pack with a switch located on a specially built stand. Inside both the faceplate and backplate, the numbers ‘6’ and ‘5’ are written with black marker and ink.
C-3PO and R2-D2 are unique in Star Wars history – they’re the only characters who have been in all nine of the main films.
