A short clip from the upcoming Star Wars project, Maul – Shadow Lord, revealed a fight between Maul and a Jedi – the first time he’s battled a Jedi on screen in six years. Fans are excited for Shadow Lord, the next installment in the Star Wars universe, which will continue the story of the popular villain. It will be available to stream on Disney+ starting April 6th.
IGN recently released a new clip from Maul – Shadow Lord on YouTube, hinting at a showdown between Maul and Eeko-Dio Daki, a mysterious Jedi Master who apparently lived through Order 66.

The video, called “Emergency on the Walkway,” shows Maul walking on a platform on the planet Janix, accompanied by several people. These individuals seem to be his followers, and at least two of them are Zabraks—the same species as Maul himself.

Across the walkway stands Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, a survivor of Order 66 who is hiding from the Empire, much like Maul. Unlike Maul, however, Master Daki has a Padawan named Devon Izara, a Twi’lek who could catch Maul’s attention. There’s even a possibility Devon might become his apprentice, potentially leading her to become Darth Talon, a character from older Star Wars stories.

During a confrontation between Maul and Master Daki, Maul spotted a crowd of people on a bridge overlooking them. He used the Force to shatter the bridge, sending it crashing down and endangering everyone on it.

Currently, it looks like Maul has captured Devon. Master Daki might be heading to confront Maul and rescue him. Unfortunately, Maul destroys the bridge, which prevents Master Daki from reaching him. Instead, Daki uses the Force to save the people who were threatened by the bridge’s collapse.

Meanwhile, Maul manages to get away from Master Daki and the Janix police. He also escapes with Devon, Daki’s apprentice, meaning Daki couldn’t protect her. Daki intentionally chooses to save the people on the bridge instead of Devon, a decision that could lead Devon to leave the Jedi Order and abandon her master – though, arguably, he was the first to distance himself from her.
This marks the first time in six years that Maul has fought a Jedi. His previous confrontation with a Jedi was against Ahsoka Tano during the Mandalore storyline in Season 7 of The Clone Wars. While this fight is different – it doesn’t involve lightsaber dueling – it’s still a significant event for the character.
By that time, Ahsoka had left the Jedi Order, meaning she wasn’t officially a Jedi anymore. However, she continued to fight for good using the Force and still practiced many Jedi skills.
Promotional material for Maul – Shadow Lord hinted that Maul would face off against other Force users in the series. We’ve seen suggestions he’ll battle characters like the Eleventh Brother from Tales of the Jedi and Marrok from Ahsoka. But the recent footage of his confrontation with Master Daki marks the first time Star Wars fans have seen Maul fight a Jedi since Season 7 of The Clone Wars.

Will Maul & Master Daki Meet Again?
As a huge fan of Maul – Shadow Lord, I’m really intrigued by this scene – it feels like the very first time Maul and Master Daki meet, but I have a feeling it definitely won’t be their last. I’m almost expecting a lightsaber duel between them later in the season, though honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Maul ends up not being the one who defeats Daki. It’s a cool twist I can see happening!
If Devon were to fall to the dark side and become Darth Maul’s apprentice, a key moment solidifying her transformation could be her ultimately killing her own master during the series.
Master Daki appears to be quite elderly. He uses a cane and his voice is raspy, suggesting he might not be as skilled with a lightsaber as he once was. However, Yoda demonstrated that age doesn’t necessarily mean weakness, and even very old beings can be powerful fighters.
We can expect Daki and Maul to fight multiple times in the new series. They’re likely to be similarly skilled opponents, but because Maul continues to appear in future Star Wars stories, it’s clear he’ll be the one who ultimately wins their confrontations.
