As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the offer of Star Wars: Battlefront II Celebration Edition for free is a tantalizing proposition. Having followed the game since its rocky debut in 2017, it’s fascinating to see how far it has come and what EA has managed to accomplish with this updated version.
For a limited time, Star Wars: Battlefront II’s ultimate edition is available for free on Xbox to EA Play members. From now until December 20th, you can add this 2017 game to your collection at no cost. If you’re an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, you also qualify since EA Play is included in that subscription, meaning you too can claim the game for free.
In simpler terms, the free version of Battlefront II you can get is called the Celebration Edition. This edition comes with the main game along with all the previous free updates. Most of the content that was initially offered as downloadable content (DLC) and microtransactions are included in this version, so you’re essentially getting the full package without having to pay for extra features.
The “Celebration Version” was initially released in December 2019 at a cost of $40, which came after the standard edition’s introduction in 2017. Even if you don’t have an EA Play or Game Pass Ultimate subscription, you can still grab the Celebration Edition at a fantastic discount as it’s now selling for just $4.
2017 saw a rocky start for Battlefront II, as its initial release received backlash due to the inclusion of loot boxes. However, Electronic Arts addressed this issue before the full launch, and since then, the game has been expanding and refining with additional maps and game modes over time.
In a twist of events, the combined sales of the latest Star Wars: Battlefront games exceeded 35 million units, yet Electronic Arts reportedly turned down DICE’s proposal for a third installment because of high licensing fees. Regrettably, the contemporary Battlefront series didn’t carry on, but earlier this year, the original Battlefront titles were re-introduced to a less favorable critical response.
Following Battlefront II, DICE published Battlefield V in 2018 and Battlefield 2042 in 2021. Now, DICE is collaborating with several other studios to produce the next Battlefield game, which is set in a contemporary era and is rumored to release in October 2025.
Regarding the Star Wars video game lineup, there are several upcoming titles such as Star Wars Eclipse by Quantic Dream and the forthcoming Star Wars Jedi game from Respawn Entertainment, along with a few others.
