Star Wars Announces Plan To Fix One Of The Rise Of Skywalker’s Biggest Problems

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about a new novel coming out! It’s going to tackle one of the biggest complaints people had about *The Rise of Skywalker*. That movie, which finished off the Skywalker saga, didn’t quite land with everyone, and there were a lot of questions about the plot. We haven’t seen a new Star Wars movie since 2019, though a sequel focusing on Rey is in the works. But Lucasfilm is still expanding the universe we love through shows, games, and now, novels like this one!

A new Star Wars novel, titled Legacy, will explore the developing relationship between General Leia Organa and Rey. The story takes place between the events of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The book delves into the connection between the characters, played by Carrie Fisher and Daisy Ridley, which began to form in The Rise of Skywalker, a film set a year after the previous installment.

After Luke Skywalker died, Rey continued her Jedi training under Leia Organa, who had secretly been mentoring her. Sadly, Carrie Fisher, who played Leia, passed away after filming *The Last Jedi*. This meant Leia’s role in *The Rise of Skywalker* was small, relying mostly on footage originally shot for *The Force Awakens*. Because of this, it was hard to show a strong connection between Rey and Leia, something the *Star Wars: Legacy* comic series aims to explore and expand upon.

Madeleine Roux’s upcoming novel will be released in 2026. She recently shared a sneak peek at New York Comic-Con’s Lucasfilm Publishing panel, telling StarWars.com that crafting a mother-daughter relationship between Rey and Leia presented a unique challenge.

As a fan, I always found the connection between Rey and Kylo Ren really intriguing. *The Last Jedi* showed they had this powerful, almost mystical link – a force dyad, they called it – and for a moment, it looked like they might even become allies. But then everything went wrong when Kylo killed Snoke and basically tricked Rey, taking over the First Order himself. Honestly, it put Rey in a really difficult position, as the writer, Gary Roux, pointed out. It created a lot of doubt and tension, especially between Rey and Leia, because it was unclear where Rey even stood after that betrayal.

Working with Rey during a time when she was feeling lost and vulnerable was really enjoyable because the situation was so complicated. The goal was to create a close bond between them, like a mother-daughter or mentor-apprentice relationship. However, this was the mother of someone Rey had a very difficult history with, making things incredibly tense and confusing. Just the idea of being around that person’s mother was overwhelming, and the whole situation was full of uncertainty.

Roux explained that the book explores the growing bond between Leia and Rey, showing how they learn to support each other. This time in their lives allows for significant character growth for Leia, particularly before her death in *The Rise of Skywalker*.

The story follows these two characters as they navigate a challenging experience, forcing them to rely on each other and strengthen their bond. It’s about learning to get along, even though they start off on difficult terms. This conflict allowed for significant growth for both of them, and even though one character is nearing the end of their arc, it created a wonderful opportunity for development.

As a big *Star Wars* fan, I’m really excited about *Star Wars: Legacy* according to Roux. It sounds like it’s going to really dig into what makes these iconic characters tick. Specifically, the book will explore Rey’s journey towards potentially becoming a future Jedi leader, and also show a side of Leia we haven’t seen much of – her as a Force user still learning the ropes and mentoring others.

The story really focuses on developing Rey as a character, giving her more complexity and exploring her inner thoughts. We’ll see what she thinks about the Jedi Order, her feelings about potentially leading it, and what that experience would be like for her.

I’m drawn to complex characters, even those who appear extraordinary. I prefer to explore their flaws and vulnerabilities, treating them as realistic people rather than simply focusing on their heroic deeds. This means showing their moments of weakness and even fear, making them more relatable and believable.

I don’t see Leia as a flawless, all-knowing figure. In fact, I think she’d probably be quite insecure, especially considering she wasn’t formally trained as a Jedi but now has to guide one.

The new book, *Star Wars: Legacy*, is scheduled to come out on July 28, 2026. According to the official description, the story centers on Rey and Leia as they travel to an ancient Jedi temple to repair Rey’s lightsaber. Author Cavan Scott previously wrote a *Star Wars* short story for the 2017 collection, *From a Certain Point of View*.

Rey and Leia’s Relationship Is Finally Being Explored

Though Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill had several scenes together throughout the original Star Wars trilogy, the most important parts of their characters’ relationship unfolded without Fisher after her death in 2016. This meant viewers had to imagine a lot of what happened in *The Rise of Skywalker*, especially concerning Leia, who was established as a Force user in *The Last Jedi* but spent much of that film unconscious.

Viewers were surprised to learn that Rey had been continuing her Jedi training with Leia a year after the previous film. The story quickly explained that Luke had previously trained Leia in the ways of the Force, but many fans felt this important backstory wasn’t explored enough.

While some Star Wars books have tried to explain unanswered questions from *The Rise of Skywalker*, including Leia’s Jedi training, *Star Wars: Legacy* will offer something different. It will focus on the special connection between Rey and Leia, a relationship that couldn’t be fully shown in the movie after Carrie Fisher’s death.

Now that Lucasfilm is working on a sequel film centered around Rey, this new Star Wars novel by Roux might hint at what’s to come for her character. It could also define her beliefs about the Jedi and her role within the order, setting the stage for the future movie.
