Star Wars Announces Historic Genre For Disney+’s Darth Maul Show

The upcoming Star Wars release, Maul – Shadow Lord, is different from typical Lucasfilm projects. This Disney+ animated series follows the story of the Sith Lord Maul after the events of The Clone Wars, and it’s taking the franchise in a fresh, new direction with both its visual style and genre.

The animated short, Maul – Shadow Lord, successfully captures the futuristic sci-fi feel of Star Wars while exploring the gritty criminal side of a cyberpunk world. What makes it truly unique, however, is its approach, which feels like a classic “cops and robbers” story. According to Keith Kellogg, the animation supervisor, this was a completely new direction for Star Wars animation, as he shared in an interview with Animation Magazine.

We’ve never really explored a classic cops-and-robbers story within the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars usually focuses on the large-scale conflicts between groups like the Jedi and Sith, or the Empire and the Resistance. However, the new comic series Maul – Shadow Lord offers something different. It’s essentially a Star Wars take on a classic cops-and-robbers story, following Darth Maul as he’s pursued by law enforcement officers Brander Lawson and Two-Boots.

As a big fan, I noticed something interesting when looking at the Disney+ page for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. It’s listed under a bunch of genres – crime, action, adventure, animation, and science fiction. That’s different from other animated Star Wars shows like The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Rebels, which are just labeled as animation, action, adventure, and science fiction. It’s cool to see the crime element highlighted, especially for a show like this!

The upcoming Disney+ series, Maul – Shadow Lord, promises to be a standout addition to the Star Wars universe. Sam Witwer returns as the voice of Darth Maul, and the show will also feature performances by Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, and Gideon Adlon. You can start watching on April 6th.

Star Wars Projects That Go Beyond Sci-Fi

The Mandalorian

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was so excited when The Mandalorian came out – it was the first time Lucasfilm really went all-in on a live-action TV series. But what really impressed me was how it wasn’t just another Star Wars story. It took those classic space opera vibes and blended them with the feel of an old Western, which was a surprisingly awesome combination.

The Mandalorian centers on Din Djarin, a bounty hunter played by Pedro Pascal, who travels throughout the galaxy completing jobs. The show draws inspiration from classic Westerns, blending the tropes of gunslingers and lawless frontiers with the familiar science fiction setting of Star Wars.

Andor

Although Star Wars is usually made for families, the show Andor took a different approach, offering a more intricate and adult story that felt like a political thriller.

The series Andor follows Cassian Andor, the character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in the years leading up to his daring theft of the Death Star plans. It quickly gained popularity by taking a unique approach to the Star Wars universe. Unlike the earlier prequels, which some criticized for being overly focused on politics, Andor successfully balanced compelling character stories with thrilling spy action and complex political themes.

The Acolyte

When The Acolyte premiered, it generated a lot of excitement because it aimed to delve into previously unseen areas of Star Wars history and uncover the beginnings of the Sith.

The new Star Wars series, The Acolyte, takes place during the High Republic era and centers around Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) as he investigates a string of crimes. While Star Wars has often featured mysteries, The Acolyte stands out by incorporating elements of a detective show.

The Star Wars Holiday Special / LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special

As a big movie fan, I’ve noticed something really interesting – Christmas has basically become a genre all its own these days! Studios are even taking existing franchises and seeing what happens when those characters celebrate the holidays. Take Star Wars, for example – the results have been all over the place, honestly.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I remember hearing about the infamous 1978 Holiday Special! It was so cool seeing Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher back as Luke, Han, and Leia before The Empire Strikes Back came out. The story was about Han and Chewbacca trying to get back to Chewie’s home planet, Kashyyyk. But honestly, it’s mostly remembered now for being… well, not very good! It definitely gained a reputation for being a bit of a mess.

Star Wars had more success when it revisited the holiday special format with LEGO. The playful nature of LEGO allowed the story to be genuinely fun and festive, focusing on Rey training Finn as a Jedi during the Life Day celebrations. The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, released in 2020, was much better received by fans.

Unknown Star Wars Horror Project

The future of Star Wars is always a mystery, but recent news indicates Lucasfilm might be exploring a darker, more frightening direction. They’re reportedly developing a horror series for Disney+ that takes place within the Star Wars galaxy – a first for the franchise, which hasn’t previously focused on horror.

It’s hard to say exactly what type of scary elements this story will include, or what it will focus on, but the novel Death Troopers (which isn’t officially part of the main story) could offer some inspiration.

For decades, Star Wars has successfully used the space opera formula, creating a recognizable style for its movies and shows. Now, it’s great to see the franchise trying new things and exploring different kinds of stories.
