Adam Driver, who was nominated for an Academy Award, has revealed he would have been open to returning as Kylo Ren after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Though he started as a major villain in the recent Star Wars films, the character became beloved by fans and ultimately found redemption. In the 2019 film, he made the ultimate sacrifice, using the last of his energy to save Rey.
Adam Driver almost starred in a solo Kylo Ren movie
So, I was chatting with the AP recently, and I let slip something pretty wild. Apparently, after The Rise of Skywalker, Steven Soderbergh and I were actually trying to get a Kylo Ren spin-off movie made! We worked on the script with Scott Z. Burns, and honestly, it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever been involved with. The script was just… amazing. Seriously, one of the best I’ve read.
Driver has always been open to returning for another Star Wars film. He’d been discussing the possibility with Kathleen Kennedy since 2021, making it clear he’d jump at the chance if the director and story were strong. He really enjoyed playing the character and was eager to revisit the role.
Despite Kylo Ren’s popularity, Disney executives Bob Iger and Alan Bergman unexpectedly rejected the idea for a solo movie about the character. The planned title for the film was going to be The Hunt for Ben Solo.
So, we pitched the script to Lucasfilm, and honestly, they were really into it. They got what we were trying to do, the whole vision. But then we went to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they just weren’t feeling it. Their main issue? They couldn’t wrap their heads around the idea of Ben Solo still being alive. And that was pretty much the end of the line for that project.
Soderbergh also talked about the project that was ultimately canceled, saying he had a lot of fun imagining and working on it privately, and he’s disappointed fans won’t get to experience it.
