Star Wars: A New Hope’s IMAX Re-Release Could Backfire For Disney

After a bumpy six years following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, the Star Wars franchise is finally close to consistently returning to the big screen. There have been numerous announcements, setbacks, and projects that were scrapped or put on hold. In fact, it seems like more directors have been considered for a Star Wars film than have actually directed one – Steven Soderbergh being a recent example.

The long wait for a new Star Wars movie is almost over: a trailer has been released for The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled to come out on May 22, 2026, confirming it’s really happening. However, because it continues the story from the Disney+ series, it might not be the complete return to big-screen adventures that some fans were hoping for.

Currently, Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s project is the only one announced that has actually moved from planning to full production, which started earlier this year. This means it faces a lot more pressure than The Mandalorian & Grogu because it will be a key test of how audiences respond to this type of show going forward.

So, why is Disney upping the pressure even higher?

A New Hope’s IMAX Re-Release Could End Up Hurting Star Wars’ Future

Disney confirmed plans for two Star Wars films to be shown in IMAX theaters in 2027, as many fans anticipated. The first, Starfighter, is scheduled for release on May 28th. The second will be a special 50th-anniversary re-release of the original Star Wars film, A New Hope, on April 30th.

It’s great to see the original Star Wars back in theaters, and even better that it’s in IMAX! There’s a lot of buzz that Disney will be showing a newly restored 4K version – possibly the original cut without the changes George Lucas made later. This re-release could be a major event for movie fans. Plus, it’s a smart move to get people excited about the upcoming new Star Wars film.

However, things can easily go the other way too. With continuing or revived franchises, fans often spend a lot of time comparing the new versions to the originals—and often don’t like the changes. The recent Star Wars films from Disney have faced a lot of this kind of discussion, with every new release sparking debate. But these comparisons aren’t unreasonable, considering the new projects naturally invite them.

When A New Hope first came out, it was unlike anything Hollywood had ever seen – a true cultural phenomenon. It remains a fantastic film that has stood the test of time, and in 2027, viewers might get to experience it in its best-ever presentation. This timing is deliberate, as it will be followed just a month later by a newer Star Wars film, allowing audiences to directly compare the two and appreciate the original’s impact.

Whether or not it’s officially Episode 10, Starfighter is intended to launch a fresh direction for the Star Wars movies. After the last few years, I think a film that simply recaptured the classic Star Wars feeling would have satisfied fans. However, if Levy and his team don’t create something truly special – something comparable to A New Hope – Disney will face a lot of criticism. Anything less than a great movie will be heavily scrutinized and its flaws will be obvious.

While re-releasing A New Hope appears to be a safe bet, it’s actually quite a gamble. The renewed Starfighter franchise could fail before it even gains momentum.
