We’re essentially building up to Kirk’s first day as captain. While it’s set in the original Star Trek timeline with Kirk and his Enterprise, we’re focusing on how things led to the ship as seen in ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before,’ sticking with that version of events. We’re not depicting the events of ‘The Man Trap.’
Look, let’s be honest, Akiva Goldsman isn’t revisiting that *Star Trek* episode everyone loves to hate. But he *is* really focused on capturing the spirit of classic *TOS* – the parts that still resonate today, which makes sense considering how much things have changed since the ’60s. It’s interesting to learn that the storytelling approach we’re seeing in *Strange New Worlds* was actually an idea DeForest Kelley floated years ago – a nice connection to the original series.
Akiva Goldsman Acknowledges Plight For Star Trek: Year One, But Cautions It’s Not A Sure Thing
With new *Star Trek* shows currently on pause, Akiva Goldsman has suggested a spin-off series connected to *Strange New Worlds*. Tentatively titled “Star Trek: Year One,” the idea is to explore Captain Kirk’s initial year commanding the *Enterprise* and showcase the beginning of his time as captain. Goldsman emphasized that this is just a proposal, and the priority remains finishing their existing shows successfully.
We have some flexibility in how we move forward, allowing for changes during the process. We envision a strong start to the show and a conclusive ending that feels complete and satisfying. This will lead us into the next phase, and we aim to deliver something familiar to our audience.
I think the new show will likely reference something from the original *Star Trek* series, and I’m interested to see how they do it. Perhaps the season will conclude with the *Strange New Worlds* bridge crew fully assembled, as we haven’t seen Sulu, Chekov, or Dr. McCoy join them yet.
