Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Showrunner About Where They’d Like The Series End, And He Gave Me A Surprisingly Specific Answer

Season 3 of *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* has just finished, bringing the show closer to its conclusion. While Season 5 will be shorter than previous seasons, the creators say it will have enough episodes to match the length of *The Original Series*. We know Captain Kirk will be in command of the Enterprise, but details about what will happen are still unknown.

TopMob interviewed Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman to discuss the Season 3 finale of *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* and what’s next for the show. I tried to find out where the series is ultimately headed and managed to get some information about future seasons and the show’s planned conclusion.

Akiva Goldsman Shares His Ideal Ending Point For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Akiva Goldsman recently revealed to TopMob that the team behind *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* aims to conclude the series in a way that leads directly into the events of the original *Star Trek*. However, he explained that this doesn’t necessarily mean the show will end at a specific, predetermined point. It could finish with the incident that leads to Pike’s injury, even though that happens after Kirk becomes captain, or at another time entirely. When pressed for more details, Goldsman hinted at where he envisions the series concluding:

We’re essentially building up to Kirk’s first day as captain. While it’s set in the original Star Trek timeline with Kirk and his Enterprise, we’re focusing on how things led to the ship as seen in ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before,’ sticking with that version of events. We’re not depicting the events of ‘The Man Trap.’

Look, let’s be honest, Akiva Goldsman isn’t revisiting that *Star Trek* episode everyone loves to hate. But he *is* really focused on capturing the spirit of classic *TOS* – the parts that still resonate today, which makes sense considering how much things have changed since the ’60s. It’s interesting to learn that the storytelling approach we’re seeing in *Strange New Worlds* was actually an idea DeForest Kelley floated years ago – a nice connection to the original series.

Akiva Goldsman Acknowledges Plight For Star Trek: Year One, But Cautions It’s Not A Sure Thing

With new *Star Trek* shows currently on pause, Akiva Goldsman has suggested a spin-off series connected to *Strange New Worlds*. Tentatively titled “Star Trek: Year One,” the idea is to explore Captain Kirk’s initial year commanding the *Enterprise* and showcase the beginning of his time as captain. Goldsman emphasized that this is just a proposal, and the priority remains finishing their existing shows successfully.

We have some flexibility in how we move forward, allowing for changes during the process. We envision a strong start to the show and a conclusive ending that feels complete and satisfying. This will lead us into the next phase, and we aim to deliver something familiar to our audience.

I think the new show will likely reference something from the original *Star Trek* series, and I’m interested to see how they do it. Perhaps the season will conclude with the *Strange New Worlds* bridge crew fully assembled, as we haven’t seen Sulu, Chekov, or Dr. McCoy join them yet.

More on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The creators of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds say the upcoming fourth season will be quite different from the third, and they’ve explained how those differences are impacting the way the show is made.

There’s been speculation that *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* could adapt a classic episode from the original *Star Trek*, and it wouldn’t be a surprising move. The Season 1 finale, “A Quality Of Mercy,” already did something similar by reimagining “Balance Of Terror,” but with Captain Pike commanding the *Enterprise* instead of Captain Kirk.

I find the idea intriguing, but honestly, I’d be surprised if the team behind *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* revisited it. *Star Trek: Enterprise*’s finale really showed us that focusing too much on other shows instead of developing your own characters can backfire. What I *do* know is I’m not ready for this show to end, so I’m thrilled we have another season and a half of adventures ahead of us!

You can now watch the newest season of *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* on Paramount+. Plus, TopMob is reporting that filming for Season 5 is expected to begin very soon.
