Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is gradually assembling the main characters who will eventually star in The Original Series. Spock and Nyota Uhura have been series regulars since the show began, different iterations of James T. Kirk have appeared since the end of Season 1, and Montgomery “Scotty” Scott came aboard the USS Enterprise in Season 3 after a brief introduction in Season 2. The actors who will play Hikaru Sulu and Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in Season 5 have now been announced, and these new additions make me even more hopeful that the rumored Kirk spinoff series will become a reality.
According to Variety, Kai Murakami and Thomas Jane will be playing Sulu and Bones in the upcoming series. They are the third actors to take on these iconic roles in live-action Star Trek, following George Takei and DeForrest Kelley from the original series, and John Cho and Karl Urban from the recent films. However, Murakami and Jane will only appear in the finale of Strange New Worlds, so they won’t be major characters throughout the season.
