Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds received an early holiday treat with the reveal of the actors who will play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Mr. Sulu in the season 5 finale. Production on the fifth and final season recently finished in Toronto, and it’s expected to debut on Paramount+ in 2027.
There are still two more seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on the way, totaling 16 episodes. Season 4 finished filming in July 2025 and will be released on Paramount+ in 2026. Paramount+ has also ordered a sixth season, with six episodes, to conclude the series about Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and his adventures aboard the Starship Enterprise.
CBS Studios and Paramount+ have revealed that iconic characters Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Hikaru Sulu will make an appearance in the last episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which also serves as the show’s finale. Thomas Jane will play Bones, and Kai Murakami will portray Sulu. Headshots of the actors are available below.
Thomas Jane is an award-winning actor known for his roles in films like The Thin Red Line, Boogie Nights, and Deep Blue Sea, as well as the TV show Arrested Development and movies The Mist and The Predator. He famously played Frank Castle in the 2004 film The Punisher. The character of Dr. “Bones” McCoy originated with DeForest Kelley in the original Star Trek series and was later portrayed by Karl Urban in the Star Trek films directed by J.J. Abrams.
Kai Murakami, a talented Japanese actor, is joining the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for his first television role. He’s experienced on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and has also contributed to video games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Rise of the Ronin through performance capture. He follows in the footsteps of George Takei, who first played Mr. Sulu in Star Trek: The Original Series, and John Cho, who portrayed Sulu in the recent Star Trek films directed by J.J. Abrams.
Seeing Mr. Sulu and Dr. McCoy in the final episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would fit with the story of Captain Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) becoming captain of the USS Enterprise after Captain Pike. However, the show seems to be skipping over Dr. Mark Piper, who was the ship’s doctor before McCoy. Either the show is briefly showing us a future timeline where McCoy is CMO, or it’s changing established Star Trek history by ignoring Piper altogether.
It’s surprising to see a well-known actor like Thomas Jane cast in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for what appears to be a single episode. His role as Bones McCoy could be a sign that the planned spinoff, Star Trek: Year One, from executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers—which would focus on Captain Kirk’s early days commanding the Enterprise—is moving forward.
The upcoming finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will feature appearances by Bones and Sulu, which is great news for fans. However, viewers will have to wait through seasons 4 and 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds before seeing Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami join the crew of Captain Kirk’s Enterprise to conclude the series.
