Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2: Mastering Etiquette To Avoid Kirk’s Diplomatic Mishaps

As a long-time Trek fan, I have to say the season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and penned by Alex Kurtzman, Kirsten Beyer, Noga Landau, and Gaia Violo – actually sets up a really interesting future for the franchise. While it wraps things up happily for Captain Ake and her cadets, it cleverly avoids a repeat of the kind of political disaster we saw with Captain Kirk in Star Trek VI. It feels like the show is proactively building safeguards against that kind of fallout, and I’m eager to see where they take it next.

Wow, the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy really wrapped things up in a dramatic way! They finally caught Nus Braka – played brilliantly by Paul Giamatti, by the way – just as he was about to unleash Omega-47 and basically wipe out the Federation. It was crazy because he actually put Captain Ake and the Federation on trial! But the biggest reveal was learning that Nustopher was really just a deeply messed up kid, fueled by lies, who happened to have the power to destroy everything. It was a surprisingly emotional moment, honestly. Seeing that kind of vulnerability in such a powerful position was pretty impactful.

Nus Braka, a space pirate who tried to destroy Federation ships, represents a tragic waste of potential – he could have been a Starfleet officer had he been given the chance. Captain Ake’s leadership as chancellor proved its worth when Starfleet Academy cadets successfully worked as a team, using their intelligence and skills to stop Braka’s scheme.

Chancellor Ake still hasn’t taught her students a crucial lesson – one that Captain Kirk and his crew aboard the Starship Enterprise desperately needed in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Starfleet Academy Season 2 Could Prevent A Disaster Like Kirk In Star Trek VI

In the final episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season one, Caleb Mir felt anxious about being invited to dinner with Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal). He worried he wouldn’t know proper etiquette, imagining he’d need to navigate a complicated meal with many utensils – “ten different forks,” as he put it. Captain Ake understood his concern and told her student:

“We don’t cover etiquette until year two. Maybe I should revisit that.”

Caleb is about to have dinner with the Federation President, but a storyline in the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy might focus on Mir and other cadets learning proper etiquette. Mastering etiquette is vital for Starfleet cadets, as it could help them avoid the diplomatic mishaps Captain Kirk experienced when hosting Klingons on the USS Enterprise-A in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise were openly wary of Chancellor Gorkon and the other Klingon visitors. Though they tried to be polite, Kirk confessed in his log that their manners were far from perfect. The dinner between the Starfleet officers and the Klingons was a diplomatic failure, with both sides engaging in rudeness and failing to connect.

Even though the dinner with the Klingons went well, Captain Kirk was always going to be blamed for the murder of Chancellor Gorkon by General Chang (Christopher Plummer). As Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) pointed out, the Enterprise crew weren’t exactly known for their diplomatic skills, saying, “I doubt that our own behavior will distinguish us in the annals of diplomacy.”

Why Etiquette Is So Important In Star Trek

Diplomacy is a core part of being a Starfleet officer, whether it involves meeting new alien civilizations for the first time or working with established allies within the Federation. This is particularly important for those in leadership positions, like Admirals and Captains. Knowing and practicing proper etiquette is essential for all Starfleet officers.

While recent Star Trek shows on Paramount+ have included more action, diplomatic solutions remain central to the stories. In the second episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, we see this firsthand as Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) successfully negotiates an agreement with Betazed President Emerin Sadal (Anthony Natale). Despite some initial challenges, Vance manages to secure Betazed as the location for the new Federation headquarters.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation is widely considered the most skilled diplomat in the franchise. He consistently achieved success through his intelligence, empathy, and refined manners. While Picard stands out as a prime example, every Star Trek captain has faced diplomatic challenges, often in difficult situations.

Genesis Lythe, played by Bella Shepard, and Darem Reymi, played by George Hawkins, both dream of becoming Starfleet Captains. Like all the cadets, they’ll need to learn proper etiquette, no matter if they plan to work in science or operations.

As a huge Star Trek fan, I’m hoping the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy goes beyond just teaching cadets proper manners. It would be brilliant if they used Captain Kirk’s disastrous dinner in Star Trek VI as a perfect example of what not to do when hosting important diplomats – a really fun and memorable lesson, I think!
