Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Must Rescue Michelle Yeoh From Section 31’s Failure

Following her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh is set to star in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. This makes her the first Academy Award-winning actress to take the lead in a Star Trek film, continuing her journey after appearing in Star Trek: Section 31.

The first Star Trek movie created for Paramount+, Star Trek: Section 31, continues the story of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) after her time travel adventure in season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. She appears in Star Trek‘s unexplored timeline – the early 24th century – now running an intergalactic nightclub called the Barram.

Section 31 brought in Emperor Georgiou to prevent an invasion from the Mirror Universe, spearheaded by San, who was once Philippa Georgiou’s lover in that alternate reality. Her victory earned her a position with Starfleet’s clandestine operations team at the conclusion of Star Trek: Section 31.

Star Trek Needs To Save Michelle Yeoh & Emperor Georgiou From Section 31

While Star Trek: Section 31 performed decently on streaming platforms, it received overwhelmingly negative reviews from both critics and Star Trek fans. Unfortunately, there are no plans for a follow-up film, as the new leadership at Paramount Skydance isn’t interested in producing more Star Trek movies for streaming.

The disappointing reception to Star Trek: Section 31 leaves Emperor Georgiou stranded in a timeline separate from the main Star Trek universe. The series takes place roughly 40 years before Star Trek: The Next Generation and over 60 years after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

It’s a shame that the plans for Star Trek: Section 31 fell through, as it would have been a great opportunity to showcase Michelle Yeoh’s talent. Casting the Academy Award winner was a brilliant move for Star Trek: Discovery, and her Oscar win places her among the most celebrated actors ever to appear in the Star Trek universe.

Unfortunately, Michelle Yeoh and her Star Trek character, Emperor Georgiou, won’t be continuing their story. Plans for future Section 31 movies or shows have been cancelled, leaving no clear path forward for them in that universe.

Emperor Georgiou Has To Return In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy To Save Michelle Yeoh

Right now, the only way to rescue Michelle Yeoh‘s character and Emperor Georgiou is through Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. However, Star Trek: Discovery season 3 revealed that Georgiou would die if she were to time travel again, creating a difficult situation.

Michelle Yeoh is a major star, and Star Trek shouldn’t risk losing her because of the Section 31 project. Both she and her character, Georgiou, deserve a better storyline than the stalled direction Section 31 has given them.

Honestly, I’d love to see Michelle Yeoh back as Georgiou! I know she was sick, but with the advanced tech they showed in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – that 32nd-century science is incredible – they could totally fix her and send her back to the future. It would be a bit of a convenient fix, sure, but it would be amazing to have her character return!

If Michelle Yeoh joins the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, she’d have the chance to act alongside Holly Hunter, who also won a Best Actress Academy Award and plays the role of Chancellor Captain Nahla Ake at the Academy.

Honestly, the idea of seeing Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Georgiou go head-to-head with Holly Hunter as Captain Ake in a Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series is enough to get me excited! It would be fantastic to see Yeoh’s character get a proper storyline after the disappointing end she had in Star Trek: Section 31. That alone would make the whole project worthwhile, in my opinion.
