Although audiences haven’t fully embraced Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, critics generally view the first season as acceptable. The “Certified Fresh” label on Rotten Tomatoes requires a Tomatometer score of 75% or higher, along with at least five positive reviews from leading critics.
Early reviews for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy are overwhelmingly positive, based on previews of the first six episodes. Rachel Leishman of The Mary Sue praised the show, saying it captures the heart of what makes Star Trek so beloved – it’s enjoyable, fresh, and stays true to the franchise.
In a review for Polygon, Samantha Nelson praised Starfleet Academy as a strong addition to the Star Trek universe. She noted that the show successfully blends familiar characters with new storylines, allowing it to expand the Federation’s story beyond the eras of Captain Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard.
Finally, and called it “an expertly crafted blend of new and classic Star Trek.”

The show features Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, and Robert Picardo. Oded Fehr and Mary Wiseman make guest appearances, and Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti appear in recurring roles.
