I was so thrilled to see Jonathan Frakes and Robert Picardo back together on the set of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! It’s just lovely and genuinely funny to watch these two Star Trek icons reunite. The new series, executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, is set to launch with two episodes on January 15, 2026, exclusively on Paramount+ – I’ve already marked my calendar!
Robert Picardo, who famously played The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager, is the most recognizable actor from previous Star Trek series to appear in the new Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Jonathan Frakes is also involved, directing the second-to-last episode of the first season on Paramount+’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Jonathan Frakes shared a heartwarming photo on Instagram of him hugging Robert Picardo, joking that Picardo was looking for a specific line delivery from their time working together on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. You can see Frakes’ post below.
I just saw this hilarious post from Robert Picardo! He shared the same photo and jokingly accused Jonathan Frakes of a hug that went on forever – like 20 minutes! He even said he had to call HR over it. It’s so funny, you’ve gotta check out his Instagram post!
Robert Picardo and Jonathan Frakes have a long history of collaborating, both as actors and with Frakes directing Picardo. Notably, Frakes directed Picardo while portraying an alternate version of the Emergency Medical Hologram in the film Star Trek: First Contact. He also directed three episodes of Star Trek: Voyager‘s second season: “Projection,” “Parturition,” and “Prototype.”
Jonathan Frakes and Robert Picardo recently reunited on screen in the 2023 Hallmark Christmas movie, A Biltmore Christmas. To celebrate the movie’s release, Picardo playfully teased Frakes with a funny post on Instagram.
Jonathan Frakes will direct an episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy debuting on Paramount+ on March 5, 2026. However, this will be his last Star Trek directing job for the time being. He’s not scheduled to direct any episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons four or five, or season two of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Jonathan Frakes has clarified that Paul Giamatti, despite being an Academy Award nominee, won’t be appearing as the villain Nus Braka in his Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode. Fortunately, both actors have confirmed that Robert Picardo will reprise his role as The Doctor, and Jonathan Frakes will direct the episode.
