Star-Studded Cast Unveiled for Catherine Hardwicke’s Gripping New Film ‘Street Smart’

For her most recent directing project, Catherine Hardwicke is delving back into the ambiance of her childhood neighborhood, Dogtown, with the film titled “Street Smart.” The story revolves around a group of youths who find themselves without permanent residences in the famous Southern California beach town, Venice.

Hardwicke collaborated on writing the drama with renowned author and screenwriter Nic Sheff (“13 Reasons Why,” “Tweak”), providing an engaging exploration of an energetic circle who band together through laughter and a touch of Robin Hood-esque mischief, strengthening their relationships and challenging traditional definitions of family.

An outstanding group of actors make up the stellar cast, including Isabelle Fuhrman from “The Hunger Games,” “Horizon: An American Legacy,” and “Orphan”; Yara Shahidi known for “Sitting in Bars with Cake” and “Grown-ish”; Michael Cimino recognized for “Never Have I Ever,” “Love Victor,” and “Until Dawn”; Daniel Zovatto, who has been in “It Follows,” “Don’t Breathe,” and “Woman of the Hour”; Kaitlyn Kemp from “The Razor’s Edge” and “I Am Your Driver”; Miles McKenna famous for “Goosebumps” and “9-1-1: Lone Star”; and professional skateboarder Isiah Hilt.

Following the unfortunate events that have significantly affected Los Angeles and the Hollywood industry, we are deeply grateful for our work here in L.A.,” Hardwicke commented in a statement marking the project’s start. (Principal photography commenced on January 27 in Los Angeles.) “We’re collaborating with an exceptionally exciting team of actors and creators to produce a film that will be intense, thought-provoking, and filled with joy.

Additionally, Hardwicke collaborates with Elliott Davis, a cameraman famed for “Lords of Dogtown,” “Thirteen” and “Twilight,” in this upcoming project. Mona May, who’s known for her work on “Clueless” and “Enchanted,” will take charge of the costumes. Chris Douridas, a music supervisor and host at KCRW, whose credits include “American Beauty,” “Shrek II,” and “Austin Powers,” is also part of the team behind the scenes.

Street Smart” is created by Natalie Marciano from Poster Child Pictures (known for “Freud’s Last Session”), Jamie R. Thompson from New Dimensions (“97 Minutes”) and Hardwicke. The executive producers include Gerard Butler & Alan Siegel of G-BASE, Jamie Marshall (“Den of Thieves,” “Twilight”), Furhman, Zovatto, David Lasky, Michael Arata; along with Rock Jacobs and Batia Parnass from Rebel Entertainment.

Thompson praised ‘Street Smart’ for its accurate portrayal of the lively Venice lifestyle, featuring independent musicians performing on the boardwalk, skate culture, and a captivating mix of the intense energy similar to that seen in ‘Thirteen’ and ‘Lords of Dogtown’,” stated Thompson.

The filmmaking team collaborated with charities such as Covenant House and Safe Place for Youth, organizations dedicated to aiding homeless and vulnerable young adults, in the creation of “Street Smart.” This collaboration aimed not only to create an engaging storyline, but also to evoke compassion, motivate action, and bring attention to the urgent issues faced by homeless youth, particularly those struggling with mental health disorders, complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), and discrimination within the LGBTQ community.

Marciano expressed great appreciation for partnering with Covenant House and Safe Place for Youth. He stated that our staff is committed to taking significant steps to help more young people get off the streets. Furthermore, we aim to use art as a tool to increase understanding and compassion about this pressing issue, while also encouraging empathy and awareness.

In this version, I’ve used more everyday language to make it easier to read. For example, instead of “represented” or “repped,” I used the word “managed” or “handled.” Additionally, I replaced “attorney” with “lawyer” for clarity.
