As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the complexities of human nature through various films, I must admit that the opening scene of “Squid Game” Season 2 left me utterly spellbound. The raw tension and emotional turmoil portrayed by Lee Jung-jae’s character, Gi-hun, in the game of Russian Roulette with Gong Yoo’s Recruiter was a masterclass in storytelling.
⚠️ WARNING: This article discloses significant plot points from the debut episode of “Squid Game” Season 2, currently available to stream on Netflix. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!
In the initial scene of the second series of the popular Netflix Korean drama “Squid Game”, there is a succession of loud explosions, but the most startling occurs towards the end of an episode named “Bread and Lottery”. Here, the main character Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) puts his life in peril by playing a dangerous game of Russian Roulette with The Recruiter (Gong Yoo), who is associated with the games’ administration.
Although Gi-hun has the opportunity to kill The Recruiter when he holds the gun, he chooses to persist even though it’s evident that their chances of survival are slim, as they both reload the gun each time before firing. This choice is risky given that Gi-hun’s intention is not to meet his end, but to stay alive, gather information about who is orchestrating the Squid Game, and locate them – information he needs to confront them three years after winning the grueling battle royale.
Lee and the creator/director of “Squid Game,” Hwang Dong-hyuk, discussed Gi-hun’s decision in the premiere of Season 2 on EbMaster, while also revealing additional details about The Recruiter’s past and Gi-hun’s intentions as the series progresses.
What prompted you to bring back The Recruiter for Season 2 and what did you want to show about who he is as a person outside of his job to bring new people into the Squid Game each year?
This Recruiter character is primarily focused on finding new players during the course of about two months each year. Pondering over what he might do during his off-hours when not working or recruiting, I imagined him as a deeply troubled individual, carrying heavy, distressing memories. To justify his actions towards the vulnerable and weak, I suspect he feels compelled to believe that they are deserving of mistreatment. In pursuit of this belief, he might mock, ridicule, and show disdain for these individuals on a daily basis.
And that was what I wanted to express with that bread versus lottery ticket — food that you can consume immediately versus that yearning for hitting a jackpot. And by doing so, he was able to convince himself that he was right all along: that people were trash, that these people who didn’t have money to buy a meal that day, their greed would still drive them to choose a lottery. And that would allow him to give himself determination and justification for what he did as a living. I almost saw that as some kind of game he would play on his own, or almost a ritual that he would do.
Why does Gi-hun even entertain The Recruiter’s proposal to play Russian Roulette to win the information The Recruiter has about the people behind the Squid Game? Why doesn’t Gi-hun just choose to shoot him, obtain the details in his pocket and go hunt the games down as he plans to, and not risk his life at all in a competition with very deadly odds?
Interpreter: Gi-hun is a character who values justice and fairness, but he also appreciates a good challenge or game. For instance, in Season 1, you can see how excited he gets when participating in the race track betting and games. I believe that he’s not only drawn to winning, but is addicted to the thrill of playing these games. Many gamblers become hooked not for the monetary prize, but because they enjoy the game itself. In Squid Game, Gi-hun emerged as the lone victor. To me, he represents someone who is deeply addicted to winning; an inner drive that has left something within him shattered and damaged.
Instead of choosing the more logical option and threatening The Recruiter with the gun, ending our lives then and there, I viewed him as someone who aimed to make The Recruiter yield by competing in a fair game instead. This is why I was eager for him to engage, as you say, in what The Recruiter had proposed. Moreover, I perceived that game as a contest or conflict between our respective values and beliefs, a chance to demonstrate to each other who was right and who was wrong, to show The Recruiter that I am a superior individual compared to him.
It seems Gi-hun believed that refusing The Recruiter’s demands would mean he couldn’t uncover those responsible for the games. To have any hope of returning to the game or encountering one of its masterminds, he felt compelled to comply with The Recruiter’s instructions. Consequently, his decision to participate in Russian Roulette, even though it could cost him his life, stemmed from a desperate desire for that chance.
In this particular moment, they engaged in a powerful exchange of words. The Recruiter tells Gi-hun, “You’re nothing special and you can’t thwart us.” To which, Gi-hun retorts, “You’re no different either, acting as a guard dog for the masters behind these games. I want to speak with your superior.” Their conversation during the game only fueled Gi-hun’s determination to succeed in it. The dialogue was masterfully crafted by director Hwang; his skill in penning that scene was truly remarkable.
Now that he’s killed The Recruiter and got the information he needs to move forward in finding the Squid Game again, what is Gi-hun’s plan from here for the rest of Season 2?
His initial intention is to halt the game, followed by saving as many lives as possible, and finally meting out justice to the game’s mastermind. What will be captivating for viewers to witness is whether he can accomplish each of these objectives during the episodes. These are some of the key factors shaping Season 2’s storyline, making it even more fascinating.
