2024 saw Squid Game Season 2 shatter streaming records upon its release, but it wasn’t the most popular series in the U.S. at the beginning of 2025. A recent report reveals that this accolade belongs to a show created by Taylor Sheridan instead.
Without any shock, it’s clear that the second episode of Squid Game has once again proven to be a huge success. Its first season was groundbreaking television, rapidly climbing to become Netflix’s most popular non-English series ever.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator, poured all his hard work, perspiration, and dedication (literally) into making Season 2 as great as the original, filled with intense trials and a thrilling finale. His labor of love has proven successful: the series garnered 126.2 million views in just its first eleven days.
Since Squid Game debuted on December 26 and rapidly took the number one spot in Netflix’s top 10 charts, it might seem plausible to conclude that it was the most-watched show at the beginning of 2025. However, you would be mistaken about this assumption.
Landman beats Squid Game in 2025 streaming chart
Despite Squid Game Season 2 claiming the top spot on streaming platforms at the end of 2024, it was actually Landman, a Taylor Sheridan show on Paramount Plus, that emerged as the most streamed title in the US from December 30, 2024, to January 5, 2025, according to the Wrap Report.
In summary, Netflix held a strong position in the rankings, accounting for seven out of the top ten programs. Yet, the creator of Yellowstone managed to take the number one spot with his latest production, focusing on the character Tommy Norris, portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton, and the thrilling oil rigging industry in Texas.
