‘Squid Game’ Actor Gong Yoo, Song Hye-kyo, Kim Seol-hyun, Cha Seung-won, Lee Hanee to Star in Netflix Period Drama ‘Show Business’

Netflix is broadening its selection of Korean content with a new period drama titled “Show Business” (working title). This expansive series takes place within South Korea’s entertainment industry during the 1960s to 1980s. Featuring an illustrious cast of well-known Korean actors, this show promises an intriguing journey through the vibrant history of the nation’s entertainment scene.

This drama narrates the journey of Min-ja (played by Song), a resilient woman who triumphs over her challenging past to make a mark in Korea’s flourishing music industry. After her impressive performance in the Lunar New Year release “Dark Nuns,” Song shares the screen with Squid Game’s Gong Yoo, portraying Dong-gu, Min-ja’s old friend. As they maneuver through the ruthless entertainment business, their longstanding bond is strained, with Gong’s character showing signs of being unpredictable but highly receptive to Min-ja’s impact.

In this exciting new production, I’m thrilled to be part of the talented ensemble. I step into the role of Min-hui, a character who shares a multifaceted bond with Min-ja, starting from our childhood devotion and eventually evolving into a more intricate rivalry as we grow older. The esteemed Cha Seung-won, known for his remarkable performance in “Uprising,” will be playing Gil-yeo, the renowned composer who possesses a magical touch when it comes to nurturing stars. Lastly, the captivating Lee Hanee, whom you may recognize from “The Fiery Priest,” portrays Yang-ja, Min-ja’s mother. Despite facing numerous life challenges, Yang-ja continues to hold onto her dreams of stardom, adding depth and emotion to our story.

In the background, the production unites screenwriter Noh Hee-gyoung (“Our Blues”) and director Lee Yoon-jung (“Coffee Prince”). This news arrives as Netflix maintains its strength in Korean productions, with “Trauma Code: Heroes on Call” now topping their Global Non-English series charts, surpassing Season 2 of “Squid Game,” which has moved down to the second position.

Netflix hasn’t set a release date for the upcoming series as of now, but they have revealed their 2025 lineup, with “Squid Game” Season 3 being a highlight.
