Dissidia is a fighting game series from Square Enix featuring legendary characters from the Final Fantasy universe. The most recent version, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, came out in 2018. Recently, Square Enix announced a new installment, but the news hasn’t been universally welcomed by fans.
Dissidia series return
Square Enix has revealed a new entry in the *Dissidia* series with the launch of an official website. While specific details are currently unavailable, they’ll be announced soon. A livestream with more information is scheduled for October 14th.
The website showcases profiles for ten characters expected to be in the game, including Cloud, Lightning, Rinoa, Zidane, Prompto, and Terra, according to fans. The mention of a “team boss battle arena” suggests a cooperative game mode where players will work together to defeat challenging bosses in limited spaces.
The initial announcement got fans really excited, but that excitement quickly faded when it became clear the new game will only be released on iOS and Android devices. Many players are now disappointed because they were expecting versions for PC and consoles.
Even people who enjoy *Opera Omnia* – a game played on phones and tablets – are hesitant about the new release. Some players believe it’s simply designed to make a lot of money quickly, as these types of games don’t cost much to create but can generate significant profits.
I really miss Opera Omnia, but I have no trust in Square’s mobile division.
I’ll only be happy with the mobile app if it feels like a natural extension of *Opera Omnia*. Right now, the way it’s being advertised isn’t managing expectations well, and people are likely to be let down.
Honestly, it feels like a lot of these games are designed to make a quick buck. They launch, everyone jumps in, they make tons of money, and then, after about 5 to 7 years when things start to slow down, they just shut it all down. It’s a really effective way to make money, so companies are going to keep doing it. Looking at the *Final Fantasy* mobile games, most of them have actually been pretty successful, at least for a while.
We’ll find out what the new Dissidia is really like tomorrow at 3:00 am PT.
