That’s ten times its current earnings, and while the holiday season could help, it really needs a significant boost in ticket sales. It’s especially surprising because critics have given the film very positive reviews, making its slow start at the box office quite worrying.
A major challenge will be when to release the new SpongeBob movie, as it’s facing surprisingly strong competition. Zootopia 2 poses the biggest threat, and it’s expected to be even more successful than initially predicted. Some believe it could even outperform Avatar: Fire and Ash worldwide.

If SpongeBob were streaming on more widely-used platforms like Netflix or Hulu without extra costs, his latest movie probably would have reached a much larger audience. Currently, it seems the movie’s release on a less popular streaming service has unfortunately hurt its performance, impacting SpongeBob and Patrick’s visibility.
Kids who don’t have cable – and rely only on major streaming services – are missing out on SpongeBob. This means a whole generation doesn’t know the character or the brand, and Paramount and Nickelodeon are now hoping their parents will take them to see the new movie. By limiting where SpongeBob appears, Paramount has hurt the chances of him becoming popular with a new audience, ending his 26-year run as a favorite among young viewers. The way the movie was advertised hasn’t helped the situation either.
The Search for SquarePants Feels Too Cheap
One of the biggest issues with the new SpongeBob movie was how it initially came across – it didn’t really impress longtime fans or newcomers. A lot of people commented that the animation looked low-budget, which isn’t surprising considering the film had a relatively small budget compared to other animated movies. Interestingly, it was originally planned as a direct-to-video release focusing more on Mr. Krabs, but that concept was later changed.
The final movie lacked the refined look of other recent adaptations, like Disney’s Moana 2. The animation felt a bit rough around the edges, and the humor in the trailer seemed overly simple, even for this series. Some viewers felt this reflected a decline in SpongeBob‘s comedic style, though it didn’t fully represent the entire film.

The initial trailer for The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants highlighted some of the show’s quirkier, less appealing aspects, much like Paramount’s approach to marketing it. This ended up discouraging longtime fans, while younger audiences didn’t see the movie as funny or interesting enough for anyone beyond very young children.
Honestly, I always felt trying to get people excited about a new SpongeBob movie was a tough sell. So many people these days either haven’t really grown up with the show or are much more into complex, serious anime. And the way they were advertising it just didn’t help! It felt like constant commercials, but on TV channels fewer and fewer people are even watching anymore. It really seems like SpongeBob, as much as I love him, might have had his moment, and it’s a little sad to admit.
SpongeBob has been popular for over twenty years, but it’s becoming harder to keep that popularity going. It’s interesting because so many people feel nostalgic for the show. Those who watched it as kids are now parents themselves, but with so many streaming options available, they might not even have Paramount+, meaning their children can’t easily watch SpongeBob SquarePants.
This feels like a holdover from a different time. Though SpongeBob SquarePants has been around for 26 years, it feels like much longer considering how much culture has changed. Today’s successful animated movies are often Japanese anime films, even with Western audiences, surpassing the popularity of something like the recent SpongeBob movie. As a result, SpongeBob‘s popularity is fading, and despite positive reviews, he isn’t the cultural icon he once was.
