Dedicated followers of the Splinter Cell franchise have pointed out that the new Netflix animated series, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, includes references to the death of Douglas Shetland, a character who appeared in the Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory games. Ubisoft has now officially stated that Deathwatch is considered part of the established storyline of the video games, although with a few small differences.
[Deathwatch] continues the story and uses the characters established in the main Rainbow Six Siege games,” a representative from Ubisoft explained to IGN. “The series stays true to the original game, but some events were altered or reimagined for the TV adaptation.
Basically, this indicates that some changes to the story have been made to fit things together after the fact, details of which we can’t reveal just yet. However, the main storyline of the series generally follows the events as they occurred in the original games.
Derek Kolstad, the creator of John Wick and showrunner for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, explained, “While there are some references to that game, we’ve tried to keep them subtle and the changes minimal [so fans won’t be bothered].”
Kolstad previously explained that the creators of the animated series had to drastically alter the original story, but they focused on preserving its core themes and emotional impact. He said they needed to “rip the spine out of the source material,” and then “keep the brain and the heart, entertain the soul, and do your best to actually build it into something that works.”
The newest trailer for the show indicates that Sam Fisher (Liev Schreiber) is still deeply affected by Shetland’s death, even decades later. This is especially true now that Shetland’s daughter, Diana Shetland, is the CEO of Xanadu. Diana has become Sam’s newest adversary, and her company is secretly causing a fresh crisis. It seems the past is far from over.
On October 14, Netflix will release Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. If you’re a fan of the series hoping for more, a remake of Splinter Cell is currently being worked on, though we haven’t received many updates about it since its announcement in 2022. Earlier in 2024, Ubisoft added Steam achievements to Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the 2013 title.
