Spike Lee Candidly Rejects Michael Jackson Biopic’s Biggest Criticism

When critics pointed out the main issue with the new movie, Michael, Spike Lee offered a simple and direct reply.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Michael is a film about the life of Michael Jackson. It traces his path to stardom, starting with his beginnings in the Jackson 5 in the 1960s and continuing through his massive success in the 1980s. The movie highlights his incredible talent, his difficult relationship with his father, and the challenges of fame. Michael Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays the iconic singer.

The recent Michael Jackson biopic faced criticism for not including the sexual assault allegations and related lawsuits. However, director Lee explained a key reason for these omissions: the film only covers Jackson’s life from 1966 to 1988, before those accusations surfaced.

The first accusation against Michael Jackson came in 1993 when the family of 13-year-old John Chandler sued him. The case was settled privately in 1994 for $22 million. This supports a point made by Lee in an interview with CNN: it wouldn’t be logical for a film set before this initial accusation to include details that weren’t part of the timeline.

Spike Lee acknowledged the criticism surrounding the film, but pointed out that audiences still came to see it. He shared his personal fondness for Michael Jackson, having watched the biopic twice, and spoke about how much he enjoyed collaborating with him. They worked together on the 1996 music video for “They Don’t Care About Us.” Lee also directed the documentaries Bad 25 and Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall. Beyond their professional relationship, Lee expressed his deep affection for Jackson as a person, describing him as a beautiful soul and saying he misses him dearly.

I really enjoyed the film. Some critics are upset about things that weren’t included, but the movie deliberately ends in 1988, before those events took place. They’re essentially criticizing the film for not including details that wouldn’t fit the established timeline.

Originally, the movie included scenes about the singer’s legal issues, even showing investigators at Neverland Ranch. However, these scenes had to be cut because of a legal agreement with Chandler, which prevented using his image or mentioning him in any films. This meant the filmmakers had to completely rework the ending and reshoot scenes with the cast.
