As the voice behind Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, in the highly anticipated Disney+ show “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” I must confess, there were moments when I harbored concerns about taking on this esteemed role and leading Marvel’s latest animated venture.
In conversation with Collider, Thames initially expressed apprehensions that “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” might become “bothersome and socially conscious,” yet found the series to be “fantastic” upon reviewing the screenplay.
Thames expressed his delight, saying, “I found it fantastic! Frankly, I had worried it would be bothersome and pretentious, but it wasn’t. In fact, it was superbly written and felt authentic.” Being the eldest of five brothers, he added, “I could relate to it. It seemed to capture accurately the dynamics of their lives during high school.”
Or more concisely:
Thames appreciated the work, saying it wasn’t what he expected – not annoying or pretentious. Instead, it was well-written and felt genuine. As the eldest of five brothers, he could relate to the high school dynamics portrayed.
The term “Woke” refers to individuals who are conscious and sensitive towards matters of social justice, including topics like race, gender, and sexual orientation. However, it can unfortunately be misused as a negative or dismissive label by people who dislike diverse and inclusive content.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that Disney has faced criticism lately due to the perceived inclusion of progressive themes in their movies and series. This has sparked controversy, with figures like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former President Donald Trump, and activist investor Nelson Peltz expressing their concerns.
In the upcoming series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” debuting on Disney+ January 29th, you’ll also see actors such as Colman Domingo, Kari Wahlgren, Hugh Dancy, Charlie Cox, and Vincent D’Onofrio.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to be part of the team where I, Jeff Trammell, take on the role as head writer. Mel Zwyer is our supervising director, ensuring everything falls perfectly into place. A stellar lineup of executive producers includes Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, and yours truly. Together, we’re working on something extraordinary!
