As a long-time Spider-Man fan with decades of comics under my belt and countless hours spent in front of the screen, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment upon witnessing yet another spinoff from Sony that fails to deliver the web-slinging hero we all know and love. The latest addition to this disheartening trend is Kraven the Hunter, which, unfortunately, falls short of expectations, much like a freshly spun web on a rainy day.
In the latest Sony Spider-Man Universe film, Kraven the Hunter, we find an instance where a Spider-Man spinoff is produced without featuring its iconic lead character, a common occurrence in such productions.
Kraven the Hunter is not just Sony’s single effort to capitalize on Spider-Man’s roster of villains; it’s a significant attempt. Earlier this year, Madame Web was one of the most poorly received films of 2024, both by critics and fans alike.
Previously, both Morbius and the Venom films were components of a small film series. Regrettably, Morbius turned out to be another cinematic flop, while Venom’s trilogy garnered varying responses from audiences.
As a devoted Spidey fan, I’ve just learned something fascinating about the latest release, Kraven (dropped on December 13). Contrary to popular belief, it seems that Sony purposefully excluded our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler from this film! Isn’t that intriguing?
Spider-Man couldn’t be in Kraven the Hunter because of the MCU
Ever since my beloved Spider-Man swung into action in 2016’s Marvel Cinematic Universe masterpiece, Civil War, the ownership of this iconic character has been a tangled web of intrigue. Then came the exciting news that my Tom Holland’s Spidey would star in his very own trilogy, produced by Sony! To add to the thrill, one of these movies even saw the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s previous versions of the wall-crawler.
It’s been a puzzle all along: Why wasn’t Spider-Man featured in the standalone Sony films like Venom and Morbius? As per Variety’s report, based on industry insiders, Sony indeed held the rights to include Spider-Man in these movies but chose not to.
It’s said that the main issue is because it was anticipated that viewers might find it awkward for Holland’s Spider-Man to show up in movies outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), following the releases of “No Way Home,” “Loki,” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” These films have apparently set clear limits within the cinematic universe.
Due to these restrictions, films such as Morbius had to undergo additional filming in order to convincingly portray scenes involving Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes (previously seen in the MCU’s Homecoming) and Jared Leto’s Morbius.
Similar to other Spider-Man spinoff films, Spidey isn’t featured in Kraven the Hunter. As of now, the movie, which premiered on December 13, has a rating of 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and is projected to earn between $13 million and $15 million at the box office during its opening weekend.
