Spider-Man: MCU Could Be Adapting This Controversial Storyline After Brand New Day

Following the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ storyline, Marvel might be considering adapting another potentially divisive story arc from the comics into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The next Spider-Man movie, officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day (and sometimes referred to as Spider-Man 4), is coming to US theaters this summer. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is directing, and Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

After “Brand New Day,” Marvel plans to release “Avengers: Doomsday” this December and “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, many fans believe Tom Holland might appear in one or both of these films.

What Spider-Man storyline could the MCU be adapting after Brand New Day?

It’s unclear what Marvel has planned for Spider-Man in the MCU after his latest appearance. Sources say they’re exploring team-up movies with either Deadpool or Mephisto, but adapting the classic “Clone Saga” storyline is also a possibility.

There’s another character introduced in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and I’m hoping their role stays as minor as the Tinkerer’s was in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Otherwise, if they become involved in a particularly disliked Spider-Man story from the 1990s – often considered the worst storyline by fans – things could get really complicated.

So, Perez hasn’t given us much detail, but there’s been a ton of buzz lately that the Jackal might show up in this ‘Brand New Day’ storyline. As a long-time Spider-Man fan, that’s huge! The Jackal is the guy who created those Spider-Man clones – Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker – and that totally explains that little tease about ‘seeing double’ they dropped. It’s all starting to click!

The Clone Saga sparked a lot of debate among fans, mainly because Spider-Man was temporarily replaced with a clone, Ben Reilly. While this change was the biggest point of contention, other plot elements, like bringing back the Green Goblin, also received a lot of criticism.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31, 2026.
