While many are thrilled to see the Hulk back, some fans are disappointed with how his character has been handled in the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently. The Hulk Was a Scene-Stealer in The Avengers
The Hulk was at his strongest in The Avengers. Mark Ruffalo’s first portrayal of the character remains his best to date, appearing fourteen years ago when he first joined forces with the Avengers.
Like in the comic books, the movie The Avengers portrays Hulk as a dangerous and unpredictable force. The Avengers see him as a potential problem as much as a powerful ally, and they try to avoid using him unless they absolutely have to. A scene on the Helicarrier clearly shows how destructive Hulk can be, as he damages the ship and almost harms Black Widow.
Many fans point to the Battle of New York as a highlight of the film. Although the Hulk isn’t as purely destructive as he was earlier, he has some of his most memorable scenes during this fight, including easily defeating a Chitauri Leviathan with one punch and accidentally knocking Thor across a building (much of his impact comes from punching!). It all leads to his most famous moment: brutally defeating Loki and famously calling him a “puny god.”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t matched the raw, powerful portrayal of the Hulk seen in The Avengers. This is understandable, as the story has focused on Bruce Banner learning to control the Hulk over time. This ultimately culminated in a transformation that removed the Hulk’s wild nature entirely, essentially putting Bruce Banner’s mind in complete control of the Hulk’s body.
Since the release of Endgame, many fans have expressed disappointment with how the Hulk has been depicted. He doesn’t seem as powerful or intimidating as he once was, which has upset a lot of people. Even a strong performance wasn’t enough to satisfy those who feel the character was weakened. However, there’s still hope that the MCU can restore the Hulk to his former glory.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Needs to Recapture Peak MCU Hulk
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’m really hoping Spider-Man: Brand New Day will finally address what fans have been wanting for years. Honestly, it’s been frustrating that Marvel hasn’t managed to create a superhero portrayal as impactful as Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in The Avengers for over a decade! With the MCU moving into a new phase, I think it’s the perfect time for Ruffalo’s Hulk to really embrace the raw power we saw glimpses of before – to become the world-breaking force he always had the potential to be.
The Hulk is most captivating when he’s a purely destructive force, causing chaos and threatening cities. Though the character has changed a lot over the years in comics and movies, the original, enraged Hulk remains the most memorable. Now that Mark Ruffalo is joining the Brand New Day project, it’s a great opportunity for him to recapture the essence of the Hulk that fans adored fourteen years ago.
Fans have seen Spider-Man team up with the Avengers many times, especially after Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy. To be truly surprising, it would be more interesting to see Spider-Man fight the Hulk. Having the Hulk revert to a more primal state and become a threat Spider-Man needs to stop would be a fresh and unexpected direction.
There’s speculation that a certain villain might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If this happens, he could be the key to bringing back a more aggressive version of the Hulk. This character has the ability to amplify negative emotions in others, and in the comics, he’s used this power to make heroes act out of control. If he encountered the Hulk, he could potentially trigger a destructive outburst, effectively reviving the Hulk’s classic, savage persona that many fans have been wanting to see again.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe still has an opportunity to showcase the Hulk’s raw power. Even though it’s been fourteen years since The Avengers, fans are eager to see Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk surpass his impressive performance in the Battle of New York. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the horizon, Marvel might have one last chance to revisit this exciting period for the character.
