Some of the next premium fiction titles to be presented at the Spain Upfront are:
“Ena” (“Ena. Queen Victoria Eugenia,” RTVE, La Cometa TV)
Javier Olivares, the mastermind behind popular Spanish TV series such as “Isabel” and “The Department of Time,” developed this historical drama, inspired by a book written by renowned Spanish author and journalist, Pilar Eyre.
In partnership with La Cometa TV, RTVE created a series centered around Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, who wed Spain’s Alfonso XIII in 1906. The series follows her journey through his extramarital affairs, a bombing incident on their wedding day, six children, exile, and the challenges posed by two world wars.
Spanish actress Kimberley Tell (“Hierro,” “Eva’s Comet”) plays the leading role.
Olivares contends that our series spans forty years of uncharted Spanish history across six chapters. The title ‘Isabel’ represents a common historical female figure, while ‘The Department of Time’ signifies how we’ve structured the topics, with each chapter offering a unique perspective, thereby creating an intriguing interplay among them all.
“Detective Romi” (Romi, Mediterráneo, Mediaset Spain, Mandarina Productions)
Written by Iker Azkoitia, known for his work on the popular show “Elite,” and directed by Inés París, who brought us “The Barrier,” this 8-part series lasting approximately 70 minutes is a captivating tale. It centers around Romina Goitia, a 30-year-old private investigator who is hearing-impaired, as she delves into the mystery of her father’s death that happened long ago. She believes it was not a natural death but a murder.
The series toplines María Cerezuela, a 2022 best new actress Goya Award winner for “Maixabel.”
Silvia Cotino of Mediterráneo observes that the protagonist’s hearing difficulties stem from a past traumatic incident and are connected to a family secret. However, she possesses unique non-verbal skills and has developed her own visual-auditory code for interpreting the world.
“Santuario” (Sanctuary, Atresmedia, Pokeepsie Films)
Last week, it was announced that a TV drama titled similarly to the podcast created by Manuel Bartual and Carmen Pacheco, known as “Berlinale Market Selects,” is an early investment by Atresmedia in science-fiction television series production. This project is being developed collaboratively between Atresmedia and the production company Pokeepsie Films, led by Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang, which is part of the Banijay group.
In this rephrased version:
The TV series titled “The Department of Time,” “Stockholm,” “Grupo 7,” and “El Bar” collectively features Aura Garrido, Lucía Guerrero, and Jaime Ordóñez respectively. This eight-episode production is set in a future post-climate catastrophe scenario, where pregnant women reside within the Sanctuary – a large dome built to shield them from polluted air during gestation.
This version attempts to simplify the original while maintaining its essence and clarity.
At that location, they reside tranquilly, tended to apart from their loved ones and the general populace. Upon Pilar’s arrival, the truth concealed within the Sanctuary shall come to light.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but sing praises about this one-of-a-kind series that truly shines with its originality and bold vision. There’s no mistaking the creative genius of Álex de la Iglesia all over it, as Miguel García, Atresmedia Sales director, would undoubtedly attest.
This work delves into complex moral quandaries, questioning our views on technology, humanity, and morality. It’s an exciting and intellectually stimulating adventure that will likely provoke thought in everyone who experiences it.” García states.
“Traffic Jam,” (“Atasco,” Onza, in association with Prime Video and Publicis Rebellion)
Produced in collaboration with Prime Video and Publicis Rebellion, penned by Rodrigo Sopeña (“La hora de José Mota,” “Club Houdini”), ‘Traffic Jam’ is an ensemble comedy that unfolds at a massive traffic jam as night descends, impacting countless drivers. The cast includes a troubled couple, a content family, strangers riding together, a used-car dealer and his customer, an undecided bride, a flamenco group… According to Gonzalo Sagardía, Onza executive producer, “Traffic Jam” delves into a rich tapestry of personal struggles and relationships. It transforms the mundane into a humorous and inviting scenario, thanks to an exceptional ensemble of comedians. The series will captivate viewers as they effortlessly connect with each storyline, as it resonates universally. This will be the first time a traffic jam is portrayed as friendly and funny.
