‘Spaceballs 2’ Gets Official Release Date and Rumored Official Title

For years, fans have hoped for a sequel to the classic comedy Spaceballs. While a second movie seemed unlikely, things changed in the 2020s when Mel Brooks, the original creator of the film, joined forces with Josh Gad. Gad pitched a new plot idea that reignited Brooks’ interest, and in June 2025, Spaceballs 2 was officially announced. Now, the film is on track to potentially become one of the most hilarious and heartwarming movies of 2027.

A major point of discussion about the upcoming Spaceballs 2 has been its title. Interestingly, a potential title was actually hinted at in the first Spaceballs movie when the character Yogurt said, “God willing, we’ll all meet again in Spaceballs 2 – The Search for More Money.” Over the years, fans and even original cast member Rick Moranis (who suggested Spaceballs 3 – The Search for Spaceballs 2) have proposed different titles. Now, with the release date approaching, details about the new movie – including the title – are starting to emerge.

According to a report from Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios will release Spaceballs 2 in theaters on April 23, 2027. That’s nearly 40 years after the first Spaceballs movie came out on June 24, 1987. Industry insider Jeff Sneider also suggests the sequel now has a title: Spaceballs: The New One.

As a big fan of Mel Brooks, I was thrilled to hear about the potential release date! If it’s true, the title just feels right – it totally captures his signature dry, deadpan humor that he’s mastered over the years. Now, with just over a year to go, Amazon has a lot on their plate – finishing up the movie and, even better, getting ready for what’s sure to be a ridiculously funny promotional campaign. I can’t wait!

The tour kicked off in June 2025 with a fantastic opening. A 100-second trailer, styled after the iconic Star Wars text crawl, quickly summarized all the major film franchises released since the original Spaceballs. It touched on the recent Star Wars films, mentioned the impressive number of 36 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies featuring two different versions of Robert Downey Jr., several DC Universe iterations, the original animated The Lion King and its 2019 remake, all eight Harry Potter films, a TV series retelling the same Harry Potter story, and a whole lot more – finishing with a funny nod to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

The upcoming film, Spaceballs 2, is bringing back most of the original cast, including Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and Mel Brooks as both President Skroob and Yogurt. Notably, Rick Moranis will reprise his role as Dark Helmet, marking his return to live-action films after a 30-year hiatus. Lewis Pullman will also star alongside his father, Bill Pullman, playing their character’s son, Starburst. New additions to the cast include Keke Palmer as Destiny and Anthony Carrigan in a currently secret role, with Gad also taking on a yet-to-be-revealed character.

Although the movie’s plot is still under wraps, insiders say it’s a sequel that builds on the existing story, but with a fresh, comedic take. It’s not a reboot or a prequel, but rather a continuation that playfully expands the franchise. The first trailer isn’t expected until later this year, but it promises plenty of laughs and humorous nods to other popular movies and shows, leaving audiences entertained.

Spaceballs: The New One is now set to come to theaters on Apr. 23, 2027.
