Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini of South Africa has publicly called out a cultural professor to a traditional stick fight, following the professor’s critique of the King’s new palace.
During the annual Reed Dance festival at eMashobeni palace, King Misuzulu, age 50, publicly challenged Professor Musa Xulu to a traditional stick fight. The King stated he felt personally and nationally insulted, and declared he was willing to fight Professor Xulu, asking those present to relay the challenge: “Tell him there’s a fighting ring if he wants this, because I’ll take him on.”
Professor Xulu, a 64-year-old expert on Zulu culture with advanced degrees in both Zulu music and cultural tourism, explained to the BBC that the king was upset by his comments regarding the new eMashobeni palace. Professor Xulu had publicly questioned the decision to spend 152 million rand (about $9 million) on renovations, especially since the Enyokeni palace had just been improved.

King Misuzulu, who became king in 2022 after a family disagreement following his father’s passing, was upset by comments made by Xulu, calling them disrespectful. He explained that while disagreement is acceptable, personal insults are an offense to the entire Zulu nation, according to a report from South African news source IOL.

Apparently, he’s been getting messages from people claiming to be hired assassins ever since the speech. It’s terrifying to think about what could happen to him.
Despite having no official political power, the Zulu monarchy still holds significant sway over the roughly 12 million Zulu people in South Africa and is supported by over $4.9 million in public funds annually.
