SouljaBoy’s New Game Console Is A Rebranded Retroid Being Sold “Without Permission”

Rapper Soulja Boy is selling a new handheld game console called the SouljaGame Flip. It appears to be a modified version of an existing device, the Retroid Pocket Flip 2.

Soulja Boy, the artist behind the 2007 hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, recently shared a video on Instagram (as noted by Retro Dodo) showcasing what looks like a handheld gaming device. He revealed it’s actually the new SouljaGame Flip console, available for purchase now on his website. He claims it has a fast processor, good graphics, and all the games you could want.

Soulja Boy initially offered his game console for $436, which was more than double the current price of $209 on Retroid’s website. However, after people started talking about the console and its high price, he lowered it to $200 – making it cheaper than buying it directly from Retroid.

As a fan, I’ve been checking out the SouljaGame Flip, and it’s pretty obvious where it’s coming from. The pictures on the website look exactly like the ones Retroid uses for the Pocket Flip 2, except they’ve added some photos of the console in white boxes with the SouljaGame logo. Even the color names – like the cool GameCube-inspired one – are the same! The product description says it’s “the ultimate handheld gaming console endorsed by Soulja Boy,” but honestly, it looks a lot like a Retroid Pocket Flip 2 with a new skin.

So, I heard about Soulja Boy selling those Retroid Pocket Flip 2s, and I was kinda confused. I reached out to Retroid myself, and they confirmed it’s not an official deal. Basically, he’s just reselling them as if they’re his own, and Retroid isn’t involved at all. They gave me an official statement clarifying everything, which is good to know!

Retroid has clarified that there’s no official agreement in place. They haven’t given anyone permission to modify their products and sell them under a different brand. The Retroid Pocket Flip 2’s design is legally protected by a US patent held by Retroid themselves.

Whether Retroid will take legal steps is still unknown, but this isn’t the first time Soulja Boy has attempted to sell gaming consoles. He previously sold emulators made in China with his own branding in 2018, and in 2021 released the TRDR Pocket, a handheld console inspired by the Game Boy.

Handheld gaming is becoming increasingly popular. This is driven by both a rise in devices for playing older, classic games and the arrival of new consoles like the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and the Xbox-branded ROG Ally.
