A24 is nearing completion with securing global rights for the film “Sorry, Baby,” which has been generating a lot of excitement at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The film ignited a multi-day auction involving Neon and Mubi, with insiders suggesting that the cost may approach $8 million.
Funny woman Eva Victor penned, helmed, and featured in the film titled “Sorry, Baby,” which revolves around a college professor recuperating from the trauma of sexual assault. Actors Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges join her in this production, overseen by Barry Jenkins, renowned director of “Moonlight.” The movie made its debut on Monday evening at the Eccles Theatre, leaving the Park City audience in awe with a heartfelt standing ovation for the moving performance.
In EbMaster’s assessment, Peter Debruge, the lead film critic, characterized the movie as “charmingly humorous yet gradually unfolding” in his review. He noted that creating a film about trauma can be challenging when those in positions of authority, who set the rules and control opportunities, believe that the proper response to hardship is to toughen up and persevere. If ‘Sorry, Baby’ succeeds, it’s because Victor strikes a delicate balance: The debut is heartwarming and empathetic, fostering a conversation we are still struggling to articulate effectively.
The market at Sundance has been moving sluggishly, with only two other films finding a buyer thus far after seven days. Then, on one occasion, Neon secured “Together,” a chilling body-horror film starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, for somewhere between $10 million and $15 million. Following that, Netflix acquired the drama “Train Dreams” featuring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. However, many anticipated films such as Dylan O’Brien’s dark comedy “Twinless,” Jennifer Lopez’s musical adaptation of “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” and Marlee Matlin’s documentary “Not Alone Anymore” have yet to find a buyer.
I had the privilege of being represented by UTA Independent Film Group during our filmmaking venture. They skillfully managed the finances and successfully negotiated the deals on our behalf, ensuring a smooth production process.
