Sophie Turner Reveals Intense Training For ‘Tomb Raider’ Role

Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, is getting in incredible shape to play Lara Croft in a new action series coming to Prime Video, Tomb Raider. She was officially cast in the role last September, beating out other actresses like Emma Mackey (Sex Education) and Lucy Boynton (Barbie). Lara Croft first appeared in the popular Tomb Raider video game in 1996, and was later portrayed by Angelina Jolie in a film adaptation five years later.

Turner revealed in a ScreenRant interview that he started preparing for the project back in February [2025], though he couldn’t share many details.

I’ve been preparing for almost a year now, and filming is starting this month. I’m really excited and feel well-prepared. I’m grateful for my strong working relationship with Amazon, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve created with Lara Croft and Tomb Raider. I truly believe it’s going to be something amazing.

Before her involvement became widely known, Turner thought about how she’d want a movie like Tomb Raider to be made.

Working on large projects, like franchises, often involves many different people and can limit your creative freedom. However, the experience really depends on who you’re collaborating with. If you’re surrounded by a team who values your input, it can be very positive. But if decisions are made by distant studio executives you don’t even know, and they’re controlling the project from afar, it can be quite difficult.

The upcoming Prime Video series, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (known for Fleabag), boasts a stellar cast. Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus) will play Atlas DeMornay, while Sigourney Weaver (Avatar: Fire & Ash) takes on the role of the main villain, Evelyn Wallis. Bill Paterson (House of the Dragon), Celia Imrie (The Thursday Murder Club), Paterson Joseph (Peep Show), and Jack Bannon (Pennyworth) round out the main cast as Winston, Francine, Thomas Warner, and Gerry, respectively.

Sophie Turner Was “Very Happy” with the ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending

HBO

While the movie Tomb Raider will introduce Sophie Turner to many new fans, she’ll likely always be best known for her role in Game of Thrones. For eight years (2011-2019), she played Sansa Stark, a character who suffered greatly – enduring years of abuse from Cersei Lannister and Ramsay Bolton – before ultimately becoming Queen of the North.

When asked by The Direct if she’d be open to returning as Sansa in one of the many planned Game of Thrones spinoffs, Sophie Turner playfully said HBO just needed to offer her a good deal. While she admitted it would be difficult to fit into her schedule, she didn’t rule out the possibility.

I was really satisfied with how Sansa’s storyline concluded in Game of Thrones, especially since so many other endings felt disappointing. Because I feel like I got a good resolution, I’m hesitant to revisit the series.
