Sony’s PSVR2 is quietly gearing up for its best stretch since launch

As a dedicated VR enthusiast who plunged $1,000 AUD into Sony’s PSVR2 at launch, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been on an emotional rollercoaster. The initial thrill of immersing myself in the vibrant world of Synapse was quickly followed by a long, cold winter of waiting for new content. But oh boy, 2024 is shaping up to be quite the redemption year!

Don’t look now but Sony’s PSVR2 is quietly in the midst of arguably its strongest stretch to date, with a number of massive hitters all coming into focus over the next few weeks.

When I spent nearly $1,000 AUD on the PSVR2 at its launch, I was completely caught up in the excitement surrounding it. Given that it’s a significant advancement over the bulky original PSVR and Move controller setup, I couldn’t help but eagerly anticipate experiencing those haptic sensations with just one cable connecting the device to me.

Since February 2023, much like countless other enthusiasts, I’ve taken a break from wearing my headset after experiencing the initial wave of launch titles that showcased the technology’s potential. It’s been hard to pry it off since then as I eagerly wait for the tech to continue its evolution.

While there have been some gems, like Synapse, for instance, it’s been few and far between.

Unfortunately, despite my strong affection for the device, the fact remains that there haven’t been enough blockbuster games to keep us engaged. However, that’s all set to change towards the end of 2024, as the PSVR2 is experiencing a surge in popular titles. Four top-tier games are on the horizon, making Q4 2024 potentially the peak and possibly final moment for this hardware.

A hot streak like no other

Only a few days have passed since the exciting launch of Metro Awakening. Although it’s not exclusively for PlayStation, it fits perfectly with the PSVR2 and, according to reviews, offers another engaging adventure in post-apocalyptic Moscow.

As a fervent admirer, I must say that the recent resurrection of the blockbuster FPS franchise, unveiled at a State of Play event earlier this year, has certainly stirred anticipation amongst gamers. Could it propel consoles and spark a rush for PSVR2 sets? It hasn’t quite reached those heights yet, but it’s definitely a promising step towards making the PSVR2 the most coveted device since its launch in the third quarter.

In just a few weeks, one of the most eagerly anticipated titles since the reveal of PSVR2 will be released. Skydance Interactive has been preparing, and they’re now ready for everyone to delve into Behemoth starting from December 5, 2024.

Over the past several years, whenever Sony mentioned PSVR2, Behemoth’s name has also been brought up. Initially, snippets of footage were gradually released, and later on, comprehensive trailers contributed to its growing popularity. Now, we’re rapidly approaching its release date.

Born from the creative minds responsible for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, one of virtual reality’s (VR) most comprehensive gaming experiences, there is a high level of anticipation surrounding Behemoth due to its impressive pedigree.

A game that combines action, adventure, and intense close-combat, featuring breathtaking graphics and colossal monsters reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus, Behemoth promises an exciting experience. While we’ll have to wait and see if it delivers as anticipated, it has been one of the highly anticipated titles for PSVR2, and now, its release is almost here.

On December 19, 2024, get ready for the powerful duo of Alien: Rogue Incursion. If you recall playing Alien: Isolation, you’ll understand why this VR experience feels so perfect.

Stepping into the thrilling world of virtual reality gaming, I’ve found myself utterly captivated by Rogue Incursion – an officially licensed Alien game that truly pushes boundaries in the VR space, much like how Isolation did before it. Immersed in a terrifying scenario where you become the hunted rather than the hunter, facing off against nightmarish Xenomorphs, this game is an adrenaline-pumping delight!

Furthermore, completing our powerhouse lineup is the PlayStation VR 2 adaptation of Hitman’s World of Assassination series. Although the series has faced some challenges in virtual reality in the past, this latest version seems to have nailed it, judging by the impression given in the recent State of Play reveal trailer.

In this game, you have 21 stages to explore, allowing you to fulfill your fantasy of being an assassin in various ways. You can plan a secretive murder by contaminating their drink or trigger a collapse like a chandelier falling on them – the decisions are all yours. With multiple playthroughs available, and if the game maintains its quality, it could become one of the device’s most popular titles.

The last hurrah for PSVR2?

In a row, those four game titles create what seems undeniably to be the most impressive phase for PSVR2 so far, and we wonder if this is its final hurrah.

Moving forward, there isn’t much information available regarding Sony’s future plans for virtual reality (VR). Following the initial launch, it appears that things have been fairly quiet, and the situation may be more concerning now than before. Apart from a few smaller games and adaptations in development, there is little news coming from major studios that would generate excitement.

It’s quite plausible that this could be the final collection of essential games for the device before it fades into obscurity. Yet, the hopeful side in me asserts that Sony might still have some surprises left and that perhaps one internal studio (maybe even Media Molecule, if I were to guess a suitable candidate) is diligently working on a project for this hardware.

It’s highly probable that, due to its limited user base and decreasing interest from its users, the PSVR2 might not see much action for a considerable period.
