The legal battle between Sony and Tencent is revealing previously confidential information, and the latest news concerns PlayStation’s upcoming live-action “Horizon” movie. Court documents show that Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, stated under oath that the movie is currently planned for a 2027 release.
According to a statement filed on October 16th, Sony’s Asad Qizilbash revealed that a script for the Horizon movie is already written and they are currently looking for a director. While no potential directors were mentioned, Qizilbash stated the plan is to start filming in 2026 with a release targeted for 2027, as reported by The Game Post.
Sony’s PlayStation Productions and Columbia Pictures have collaborated on film adaptations of popular PlayStation games, including *Uncharted* starring Tom Holland and *Gran Turismo*. Both studios are part of the Sony family of companies.
This issue arose during the legal case because Sony claims Tencent copied elements from their game, Horizon, for their new game, Light of Motiram. According to Qizilbash, Aloy, the main character of Horizon, is a central figure for PlayStation and vital for growing the game franchise.
A live-action ‘Horizon’ series was planned for Netflix, but development stalled last year. This was reportedly due to allegations of misconduct against Steve Blackman, who also leads the show ‘The Umbrella Academy’.
The Horizon movie is part of a growing list of PlayStation game adaptations currently being developed for film and television. Other projects in the works include a Helldivers movie, both anime and live-action versions of Ghost of Tsushima, a Days Gone movie, and a God of War TV series. Plus, the popular TV show The Last of Us, based on the Naughty Dog game, will return in 2027 for what might be its final season.
Recent court documents from the Sony and Tencent legal battle reveal that Tencent approached Sony about partnering on games like The Last of Us and Horizon. Sony turned down Tencent’s idea for a Horizon collaboration, after which Tencent created a game called Light of Motiram, which Sony characterized as a direct copy.
