Sony teams up with Left 4 Dead creator on new 4-player cooperative shooter

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bad Robot Games have announced they’re working together to release Bad Robot Games’ first original game. While Sony and PlayStation are famous for immersive, single-player adventures like The Last of Us, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon: Zero Dawn, this new project is a departure. It’s a four-player cooperative shooter led by Mike Booth, the designer behind Left 4 Dead, who also serves as Chief Creative Officer at Bad Robot Games. This new game from PlayStation sounds very promising, especially given the success of Left 4 Dead.

Not much is known about this upcoming game yet, and it doesn’t have a title. However, it’s confirmed to be in development for both PlayStation 5 and PC. The game will heavily focus on cooperative gameplay, with Bad Robot Games CEO Anna Sweet saying she’s thrilled Mike Booth is leading the creative process to deliver memorable experiences with friends. More information about the game will be revealed soon.

PlayStation Studios has faced challenges with multiplayer shooting games. Some, like Concord, were unsuccessful at launch, and others, like Marathon and Fairgames, haven’t quite found their footing. However, Helldivers 2 has been a success, and the upcoming game from Bad Robot appears to be taking a similar approach. While PlayStation’s other multiplayer games have struggled, Helldivers 2 stands out by focusing on cooperative gameplay where players work with each other against computer-controlled enemies, rather than competing against each other. If developed well, this new game could be another win for PlayStation’s efforts in the live-service shooter genre.

About three months ago, Mike Booth announced on the Left 4 Dead 2 subreddit that players could sign up to test a new game. You can still join the playtest through the Bad Robot Games website. The playtest is kept secret, so don’t expect any news or details about the game for a while. However, the fact that testing is already happening is a good sign. We might not have to wait much longer for a public reveal or the first trailer – it’s possible we’ll see something at the Game Awards showcase next week.
