To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Sony has announced the five most popular shonen manga on its e-reader. The list features best-selling series like Attack on Titan and One Piece.
According to Sony, their ranking included a look back at the platform’s history. It originally launched in 2010 and was available in the U.S., Canada, and parts of Europe. Sony later closed the Western stores in 2014, moving users to Kobo. The service continued to operate in Japan, where it has been tracking digital manga sales for 15 years.
Attack on Titan Crowned Sony’s Top-Selling Shonen Manga After 15 Years
Sony recently shared sales data revealing the five most popular shonen manga series the store has sold in its 15 years of operation:
- Attack on Titan
- Demon Slayer
- One Piece
- That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
- Jujutsu Kaisen
Attack on Titan was the best-selling series, and its popularity is clear. Even though the manga finished in 2021 and the anime in 2023, sales are still incredibly strong. As the only series on the list that has both a finished manga and anime, its number one ranking shows how lasting and beloved the franchise is, with fans continuing to revisit the story long after its ending. Sony described Attack on Titan as “an indispensable masterpiece” celebrating the Reader Store’s 15th anniversary.
I was really struck by how well Demon Slayer did, landing in second place. It makes sense considering how popular it is worldwide, but it’s still amazing when you think about how quickly it became a hit. The manga only ran from 2016 to 2020, but it’s clearly still driving a lot of interest. Sony even highlighted that Demon Slayer was a uniquely popular title they hadn’t seen before on their Reader Store.
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is incredibly popular worldwide, so it’s no surprise it ranks so high. As a hugely influential manga and anime series, and with Luffy being a fan-favorite character globally, some might be surprised it isn’t higher. However, One Piece had a large and dedicated fanbase before the Reader Store even existed, with many fans already buying manga elsewhere or collecting physical copies. Considering this, and the fact that all other series on the list started after the Reader Store launched, its position makes sense when looking at the bigger picture of digital manga sales.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ranked fourth in popularity. Starting as a light novel by Fuse and later becoming a manga by Taiki Kawakami in 2015, the series has grown a large fanbase thanks to its anime adaptations, movies, and related stories. However, there’s still plenty of source material for the manga, and a fourth season of the anime, along with a new movie, are already planned.
Rounding out the top five is Jujutsu Kaisen. Gege Akutami’s popular series is considered one of the most important shonen manga of the last ten years. Even though the manga finished in 2024, its continued popularity has kept it in the news and secured its place on this list.
Even though the Reader Store is only available in Japan now, you can still find all of the books listed in the ranking on the Kindle Store.
