Sony recently released its 2025 Corporate Report, which includes updates on all parts of the company, including PlayStation. A key takeaway from the report is Sony’s continued focus on live-service games, even after facing some challenges with them recently.
Sony stated in the document that they are still improving their ability to run ongoing live games, pointing to titles like MLB The Show, Helldivers 2, Gran Turismo, and Destiny 2 as examples of this work.
Sony highlighted Bungie’s Marathon as a key component of their future live-service plans. Although the game has faced recent setbacks – including an indefinite delay and allegations of stolen artwork – Sony didn’t mention any other upcoming live-service titles, such as the reportedly problematic Fairgame$.
The game is being developed by Haven Studios, a Sony-owned studio. Its former head, Jade Raymond, recently departed, reportedly due to issues with the project’s budget. Development has been delayed, and the game is now expected to launch in Spring 2026, around the same time as the highly anticipated release of GTA 6 in May 2026.
Daniel Drapeau, the director of Fairgame$, resigned from the company earlier in 2024. While this, along with its absence from Sony’s recent report, doesn’t automatically indicate any problems for Fairgame$, it’s something to note.
Sony initially planned to launch twelve live-service games in the coming years, while still continuing to make single-player games. However, in May 2023, the company decided to reduce that number to six, emphasizing a focus on creating high-quality games rather than a large quantity. As a result of this shift in strategy, Naughty Dog canceled the multiplayer component of The Last of Us in December 2023.
Early in 2024, Sony achieved its greatest success yet with live-service games thanks to Helldivers 2. The game quickly became a massive hit, ranking as the third best-selling game in the US for the year. It’s recently been released on Xbox and, combined with a new update, is experiencing another wave of popularity.
Okay, so Sony really whiffed with Concord. It launched in August 2024, and honestly, it flopped *hard*. They pulled it offline super quickly and gave everyone their money back. Sadly, the studio that made it, Firewalk, ended up closing down too. To top it off, by the end of the year, Sony announced they were scrapping a bunch of other live-service games they were working on, including a live-service God of War and another one from the team at Bend Studio. It was a rough year for their live-service push, to say the least.
After the disappointing launch of Concord, Sony’s Hermen Hulst explained that the company has implemented new processes to improve the quality of its future live-service games before they are released.
