As a long-time follower of international cinema and a connoisseur of heartwarming comedies, I am absolutely thrilled about Sony Pictures International Productions picking up the remake rights to Arnaud Lemort’s “Family Therapy.” Having lived through my own family therapy sessions, albeit less dramatic, I can certainly relate to the universal themes this movie portrays.
Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) has acquired the rights to remake the French family comedy “Family Therapy” (“Jamais sans mon psy”), which was originally created by Arnaud Lemort, from Newen Connect.
As per the agreement, SPIP is tasked with creating region-specific adaptations of the French film globally, except for China and France.
Titled “Family Therapy,” this production by Mathieu Verhaeghe and Thomas Verhaeghe from Atelier de Production tells the story of Damien Leroy, a man plagued by severe anxiety. His therapist, Dr Beranger, pushes him to seek a partner for companionship. An unexpected turn of events finds Damien smitten with Alice, only to discover that her father is none other than his therapist who vows to torment Damien’s life relentlessly.
The lead actors in this film are popular French comedy stars such as Christian Clavier (known for “Serial (Bad) Weddings,” “Asterix and Obelix”), Baptiste Lecaplain (“The Exes,” “Nous York”), Claire Chust (“Instant Family,” “Miss”), Cristiana Réali, and Rayane Bensetti (“Let’s Dance”). The production of this movie is a collaboration between TF1 Studio, UGC, and TF1 Films Productions.
We’re constantly seeking out high-quality films for local adaptation, and when ‘Family Therapy’ was presented by the skilled teams at Newen Connect, TF1 Studio, and UGC, we immediately saw its potential,” stated Shebnem Askin, EVP of creative production and head of Sony Pictures International Productions. “It’s a delightful film that resonates with everyone, and we can’t wait to bring this comedy to audiences worldwide,” added Askin.
Alice Damiani, Senior Vice President of International Film Sales at Newen Connect, who worked on the deal with SPIP, referred to “Family Therapy” as a “heartwarming comedy about relationships that carries powerful, cross-cultural messages.
She stated that Sony Pictures International Productions acquiring the global remake rights shows how universally appealing the topic is and how well it can be tailored for local audiences.
In more than 30 different countries, Newen Connect has successfully distributed “Family Therapy” in partnership with prominent film distributors like Vendetta Films (Australia & New Zealand), Paradiso (Benelux), Beta Film (Bulgaria), TVA Films (Canada), Donart (Czechia & Slovakia), Estin Film (Estonia), Lighthouse (Germany & Austria), Spentzos (Greece), Vertigo Media (Hungary & Romania), Movies Inspired (Italy), Forum Film (Israel), Grand Entertainment (Middle East), Telewizja Puls (Poland), Nos Lusomundo (Portugal), A Contracorriente Films (Spain), Pathé Films (Switzerland) and Total Film Distribution (Ukraine). Additionally, Skeye has acquired the rights for airline screenings.
In France, “Family Therapy” will be released in by UGC Distribution and TF1 Studio on Dec. 11.
Previously, Newen Connect, a commercial division associated with Newen (which is under the umbrella company TF1), sold the rights for the U.S. remake of the popular French cop comedy series “Haut Potential Intellectuel” to ABC. The upcoming American adaptation, written by Drew Goddard, features Kaitlin Olson as the main character – a single mom with a brilliant mind who assists in solving crimes.
