Sony is developing AI that could play games for you when you get stuck, according to a newly filed patent.
The discussion about artificial intelligence in gaming continues, and many leading developers have publicly shared their opinions, both for and against it. Regardless of your viewpoint, AI is clearly becoming increasingly important in the gaming world.
Recently, both Arc Raiders and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have faced issues related to AI-generated content. Arc Raiders received criticism for its use of AI voices, and Clair Obscur had an award taken back because it used temporary, AI-created art.
A new Sony patent reveals a system that could allow PlayStation games to play portions of themselves automatically, potentially helping players through difficult sections.
Sony patents AI tech that would help you complete games
The application was first submitted in September 2024. Recently, a status report from the World Intellectual Property Organization became available and was noticed by allaboutai.
Sony is exploring a new gaming feature that uses AI to help players in a more natural way. Instead of just providing text-based hints like the PS5’s Game Help, this system would show players what to do through an “AI overlay,” almost like watching another player’s “ghost” as they play.
This feature offers several different ways to play: Story mode, Combat mode, Exploration mode, and Full Games. For instance, Combat mode can help you learn how to beat enemies by showing you the best times to attack and what patterns to use.
If you get stuck, Full Game mode lets a ghost player finish a section for you, so you can keep the game moving.

As a gamer, I totally get why this system was created. Games are getting insanely complex, and honestly, if I’m stuck, I usually end up quitting or just giving up on a quest. Yeah, I could spend hours searching online for guides or watching someone else play, but that takes forever and often doesn’t even help with the specific problem I’m facing right now. It’s a real pain!
Just because a patent is filed doesn’t mean it will actually appear in a PlayStation game. Companies often patent ideas to protect their work, but many of those ideas never become reality.
And it’s not just this new thing Sony’s been playing with! I recently found out about another patent they filed – it’s for a system that could actually censor games as you’re playing them, in real time. Pretty wild, huh?
